The prototype of the .60 calibre cannon was developed in 1946. During tests in 1949 it reached a cadence of 2500 rounds/min, which was increased to the final 5000 rounds/min. In 1950, it was decided to change the caliber to 20 mm (the prototype T-171, later introduced as the M-61 Vulcan) and 27 mm (the T-150).
