SOV - R-73 / AA-11 Archer

R-73 / AA-11 Archer

Currently one of the best PL missiles for close maneuver combat.
The first version introduced in the USSR to arm Mig-29 and Su-27 machines in 1985, and later for others such as the Su-39 (modernized Su-25), Yak-141 and also the modernized Mig-21-93.

The PL missile can be used in conjunction with a helmet sight, which significantly increases the possibility of intercepting enemy aircraft during manoeuvre combat.

In 1994, a modernized version of the R-73M was introduced, later redesignated R-74ME. A significant improvement was an increase in the angle of view of the IC warhead to 60 degrees from the previous 45.

Diskuse

A few clarifications for the author on the R73 article.
There are two types of overloads mentioned in the PLŘS. The first kind is when the missile is mounted on a carrier which at the moment of launching this missile must not exceed the overload specified by the manufacturer and this is set at +12G for the R73. Above this overload, the missile is blocked.
The second type is the so-called flight overload when the missile is already flying alone behind the target in the case of the R-73 this overload is NOT limited by the manufacturer ! The maximum range of the R-73 in a PPS descent is 40km.
The standard suspension of Mig 29 of our air force used a combination of 2x R-27, 2x R-73, 2x R-60 but it was basically stupid because the S-31 on-board missile navigation set took the signs of missile suspension from only two hangers and from positions 1a3. The normal combination should have been 2xR-27, and 4x R-73, or 4x R-60.

big tiger:
Thanks for the clarifying info. I have corrected the information above.

I haven't seen what you say about the suspension of the PLRS anywhere. I have verified that in the USSR, during the live firing in 1990, all 3 PLRS were used at the same time. However, it is true that the R-73 was not fired at all back then. Supposedly because the R-60MK had a 100% success rate.

We were unlucky in Astrakhan last time. Mig 29s were fired there mainly from GS-30-1 guns and then from the suspensions you mention, but there the Russians proved that our suspensions were bullshit. After the cannon, they were mainly shooting R-60MKs, but only because they were the cheapest.

big tiger: interesting and logical regarding the use of the R-60MK Smile. Thanks.
I've seen it justified before just because the R-60MKs were successful on every launch. However, did they fly the R-27, R-73, R-60 or just the R-27, R-60? I didn't deduce that from your answer. Were the R-73s completely omitted from the suspension as well?

Radim, I'm sorry I haven't heard from you in so long. During the last OBS Astrakhan with Mig 29 as far as I know only R- 60 MK were used, and the GS-30-1 cannon R-73s were not suspended and R-27s were suspended but I can't say if any were fired. However, I'll find out pretty accurately when I look into my annals.

Citace :

According to my materials, this should be a training aerodynamic version of the R-73.

My materials confirm Yours, the pure white is an aerodynamic demonstrator, the version with 3 stripes of black is more of a technology demonstrator used for ground crew and pilot training. This version is more widespread, it is commonly used in demonstration flights, it simulates aerodynamic and weight loads in manoeuvre combat.

Hello gentlemen, it is clear from the communication between you that at least some of you have practical experience with this bullet. Can you tell me what is the mechanism /what is it for/ on the control part of this bullet, just before the BC /pictured/? It's a bow connected to what looks like a PIM safety. Is it a fuse that had to be removed before takeoff and reinserted into the missile after landing? Thank you
