In júli 1863 lost konfederačná army brigádneho general Lloyd Tilghman. This native of Maryland, he worked in the civile ako inžinier. Just before the war sa presťahoval to Kentucky. After začiatku secesie vstúpil to konfederačnej army, ako veliteľ 3. pešieho kentackeho regiment. In októbri 1861 hľadal general Albert Sydney Johnston, the general, who would be responsible fortified zraniteľné pozície on riekach Tennessee and Cumberland.
