The AMX-32 tank project was the development of the commercially successful AMX-30 tank as a private initiative of Atelier de Construction de Roanne and AMX-APX for export purposes. Development took place between 1975-1979, the first prototype was presented in June 1979 at the Satory exhibition, a second prototype with a 120mm calibre gun was completed in 1981 and production of the prototypes was completed in 1982. A total of 6 prototypes were produced, but serial production was not started due to lack of interest from potential customers. As the development of the tank was parallel to the modernization of the AMX-30 tank according to the requirements of the French Army, some of the elements used in the AMX-30B2 also appear in the AMX-32.

The tank has improved armour. Composite armour is applied to the exposed frontal parts of the turret and hull. The rest of the hull and turret consists of welded plates of rolled homogeneous steel, with imaginary armour used on the sides as protection from cumulative ammunition. The tank is equipped with a WMD protection system and an automatic fire suppression system.

According to the customer's wishes, the tank could be delivered with different motorization and armament. The basic armament was the 105mm rifled and unstabilised CN-105 F1 gun with 47 rounds, the alternative was the new 120mm smoothbore GIAT CN120-25 modèle G1 gun with 38 rounds. Both guns could use standard NATO ammunition of 105 and 120 mm calibre respectively.

The AMX-32 was equipped with a new COTAC fire control system consisting of a ballistic computer, a passive observation and targeting device, and a laser rangefinder. The gunner is equipped with an M581 sight with 10x magnification and an APX M550 laser rangefinder (manufactured by CILAS) with a range of up to 10 km. The information from the individual sensors (meteosensor, rangefinder, etc.) is used in the ballistic computer APX M241 to calculate the aiming point. The tank commander's workstation is equipped with an M527 panoramic telescope with gyro stabilisation.

The disadvantage of the fire control system is the use of unstabilized weapons, which did not allow accurate firing while moving. When firing from a position at a stationary target 2000 m away, the manufacturer gives a hit probability of 90% regardless of day or night conditions.

In addition to the main gun, the tank is equipped with a 20mm cannon and a 7.62mm machine gun. The 20mm cannon is partially interlocked with the main gun in terms of aiming, but has the option of independent aiming in the range -8°- 40°. The 7.62mm machine gun is mounted on the turret.

Either the original engine from the AMX-30 (Hispano-Suiza HS-110 with 530 kW / 720 hp) or the improved Hispano-Suiza HS-110-S2 engine with 574 kw / 780 hp can be used as the tank's propulsion system. Both engines are 12-cylinder, diesel engines with the possibility of using different types of fuel.

The AMX-32 tank chassis differs from the AMX-30 chassis only in details. The tank was able to overcome underwater water obstacles with a depth of up to 4 m after the installation of a deep-wading setup.
