Oberleutnant Richard Hess

* 31 December 1892 Hranice na Moravě, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary
+ 24. 02. 1918 Valsugana, Italy

Pilot of K. u K. Luftfahrtruppe
Units: Flik 36, Flik 60J

Richard Hess was born on 31 December 1892 in Hranice na Moravě. As his father August and uncle Richard were high military officials, he chose a career as a military officer after finishing his realschule (high school). He entered the prestigious Kavalleriekadettenschule (Cavalry Cadet School) in Hranice in Moravia as a cadet, where he was subsequently ranked second best in his class.
He was promoted to the rank of Kadet - Fähnrich (Cadet - Ensign) and was sent to Landwehrulanenregiment Nr. 5 (Landwehr Hulan Regiment No. 5) in Stockerau near Vienna. Here he was caught at the beginning of the Great War. He was put in charge of the cavalry reconnaissance of one of the divisions. For his combat reconnaissance he was awarded the Silver Medal for Bravery 2nd Class in October 1914.
He was wounded on 2 December 1914 and subsequently promoted to Leutnant on 1 January 1915.
In February 1915 he rejoined the regiment, commanding a cavalry platoon and later a replacement squadron. He was awarded the Bronze Meritorious Service Medal (Signum Laudis) in 1915 for further distinguished service, and after the introduction of the decoration of war swords, these were additionally awarded to him.
At the turn of 1915-1916 he volunteered for the K. u K. Luftfahrtruppe (military air force). In the summer of 1916, he successfully completed an aerial observer course and on 22 October 1916 was sent to Flik 36 operating at Braila airfield.
He was promoted to Oberleutnant on 1 November 1917. During his one year of service with Flik 36 he carried out 51 reconnaissance missions as an observer, 3 bombing missions and took part in aerial combat 6 times with his moving machine gun.
He once made an emergency landing with his pilot. On 12 March 1917 he was awarded the badge of aerial observer. On 31 July 1917, he was awarded the Military Cross of Merit, Third Class, with war decoration and swords. And in August 1917, after his 39th combat flight, he was decorated with the Charles Military Cross, and later received the German Iron Cross 2nd Class and the Ottoman Iron Crescent.

He also wanted to become a pilot, so the pilots of the unit taught him to fly (Oberleutnant Gawel, Feldwebel Rumiha and Zugsführer Wiesmayer). In this way he completed 64 flights and in November 1917 he was sent to the Continuation Pilot School, where he was awarded the badge of Field Pilot - Feldpilot on 22 December 1917 (probably he was also credited with the flights he completed as an observer).

On 20 February 1918 he is presented with a Flik 60J operating at Grigno.
Here, on 20, 21 and 22 February 1918, he flew three heavy combat flights, during which he encountered the enemy. His flying machine had to be sent in for repairs after his three combat flights.
On 24 February 1918, he flew another combat flight. Soon his flight formation was in combat contact with enemy aircraft. His aircraft was probably hit and he himself may have been wounded, but he did not break away from the enemy and continued the aerial combat. Eventually he was left alone with four enemy aircraft and they mercilessly shot him down near Valsugano, Italy. On 18 March 1918, he was posthumously awarded the Order of the Iron Crown, Third Class, with war decoration with swords.

Notes:
His father August Hess attained the rank of Major General and retired on 25 May 1914.
His uncle Richard Hess attained the rank of Militäroberintendant 1. Klasse (Military Chief Intendant 1st Class) or Militär-Oberrechnungsrat 1. Klasse (Military Chief Accountant 1st Class) and retired on 25 February 1914 (he served as a military official and his rank is equivalent to the Army rank of Oberst).

The Kavalleriekadettenschule (Cavalry Cadet School) in Hranice in Moravia was founded in 1878. It was a very prestigious military school of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918 it ceased to exist. However, a year later in 1919 (January 1920) it was restored in Pardubice - the Central Equitation School was founded, which had the task of cavalry training of officers. It was replaced (relocated) in September 1920 by the Central Cavalry Institute in Hranice na Moravě. In 1921, the Central Equestrian Institute moved to Hodonín to the Equestrian Teachers' School, which was established in October 1920 (it was closed down). In 1922, the Central Equestrian Institute was renamed the Riding School in Hodonín. In 1925, the Riding School was moved from Hodonín to Pardubice. In October 1928 it was renamed the Military Equestrian School Pardubice. It ceased its activity after the occupation by fascist Germany in the summer of 1939 and was not renewed.

He spoke German, Polish (from his mother), English, French and probably also Czech.
