The adoption of the Jagdpanzer 38(t) tank fighter into series production addressed the acute need for mobile anti-tank guns, even at the cost of an imperfect design. The Jagdpanzer 38(t) was in fact an improvisation. The requirement for a light tank fighter led to the specification of the Jagdpanzer 38(t) even before the actual birth of the E-10. Subsequently, however, in early 1944, as part of the consolidation of armament production, it was decided to develop and produce unified platforms based on the Panther, Tiger tanks and the new Pz.38 "Reich" (later renamed Pz.38D) platform. The direct successor to the Jagdpanzer 38D tank fighter was to use a modified (enlarged) platform of the original Jagdpanzer 38(t). The fighter was to be armed with a 7.5 cm PaK 42/1 gun with a barrel length of 70 rounds (a modified gun from the medium tank Panther) and powered by a powerful Tatra 103 diesel engine. Work on the project was carried out by Alkett in cooperation with designers from BMM Prague and Škoda Plzeň. The prototype was to be shown to Adolf Hitler on his birthday in 4/1945. The disastrous industrial production and technical problems accompanying this project caused that probably no full-scale prototype was produced. There are, however, references to one Jagdpanzer 38 with a long gun1) in the records of the armoured equipment collection depot in Milovice as part of the collection of trophy equipment on Czechoslovak territory after the end of World War II1). It is questionable whether it was meant to be a Jagdpanzer 38D, or whether it was some modified Jagdpanzer 38(t) (there was a design for such a modified fighter as well). The question is how the prototype of the Berlin firm would have reached the Czech territory. Other sources claim that two prototypes were under development at Alkett, which waited until 4/1945 for the delivery of gearboxes from Zahnradfabrik.
Plans called for the Pz.38D platform to replace all platforms except the Panther and Tiger. A number of weapon carrier projects of various categories were developed to use this platform. Some projects were completed to prototype form, but used components of its predecessor Jagdpanzer 38(t), only after the start of production, which in the latest plans counted on up to 1250 machines per month, were production machines to be built on this reconstructed platform. The last rescue plan (Notprogramm) discussed at a meeting with the Generalinspekteur der Panzertruppen on 14 March 1945 counted on a monthly production of 250 Pz.38D platforms (of which 225 were to be Jagdpanzer 38D and 25 Bergepanzer 38D). However, all plans were interrupted by the end of the war.

The fact that the use of a cannon without a braking gear (Jagdpanzer 38 D Starr) was considered from the beginning of the planned production is evidenced by the report Albert Speer of 23.3.1945 about the request Adolf Hitler to demonstrate the proposed prototypes. In addition to the Jagdpanzer 38 D Starr, there are other interesting vehicles in the list.
