A-20B from the 3rd Squadron of the 8th Guards Bombardment Aviation Regiment, 221st Bombardment Aviation Division), 16th Air Army), 1. Belarus front), Zadonsk airport.

Crew:
- Šturman - guards second lieutenant (guards junior lieutenant) Alexey Nikolayevich Šaljutin (Alexey Nikolayevich Shalyutin)
- pilot - guards lieutenant (guards lieutenant) Alexander Michajlovič Sučkov (Alexander Mikhailovich Suchkov)
- Strelec-radista - guards sergeant (guards sergeant) Ivan Josifovich Mikhailov (Ivan Iosifovich Mikhailov)
- Strelec - guards sergeant (guards sergeant) Ilya Arsentyevich Popugaev (Ilya Arsentyevich Popugaev)

The crew in this composition was sent by the unit command on 15.12.1943 on a reconnaissance flight with the task of finding out the number of artillery units and tanks of the enemy in the area of Garmovichi, Korotkovichi and the adjacent kolkhoz (peasant cooperative). In the Korotkovichi area their aircraft was attacked at 0930 hours by six enemy fighters, identified by the crew as Messerschmitt Bf 109. In the unequal dogfight, the Soviet aircraft received eight hits by enemy air cannon and 200 hits by air machine guns. Enemy fighters attacked the reconnaissance aircraft a total of six times, firing to disable the elevator, shoot out the right tank, the right undercarriage leg cover, and shoot out the left propeller. At the same time, they severely injured the gunner, Popugaev, who sustained a severe injury to his hand from a fragment of an explosive projectile. Rifleman-radar Mikhailov was hit in the leg by shrapnel from a missile. Nevertheless, both did not cease to conduct defensive fire and managed to shoot down one attacking machine in cooperation. The aircraft became uncontrollable after the hits and fell from an altitude of 4,000 meters. Thanks to the skill of the pilot, Alexander Sukhkov, the machine managed to be picked out of the fall at only 800 meters and continue towards the home airfield. Due to the hits received, the dashboard did not work, but the pilot, aware of the fact that he had a badly wounded gunner on board, guided the machine 160 km to his airfield. He was assisted in this effort by the shturman (navigator) Alexey Shalyutin, who did his best to guide the pilot to their airfield. The landing was successful, and for this heroic fight, pilot Alexander Suchkov and staffman Alexey Shalyutin were awarded the Order of the Patriotic War 1st Class. Rifleman-radarman Ivan Mikhailov was awarded the Medal of Combat Merit and Rifleman Ilya Popugaev the Medal of Courage.
