During development work on the new Tiger heavy tank, army officials were not satisfied with both the turret and the main weapon, the 8.8 cm gun. An order Adolf Hitler dated 26 May 1941 said that it was desirable if a weapon of smaller calibre than the 8.8 cm was developed, with the proviso that the smaller calibre weapon should have comparable performance and ability to destroy tanks, fortified defence points and bunkers. The requirement for a smaller calibre was coupled with the ability to carry a larger supply of cartridges as well as the lower weight of the turret itself. WaPrüf 6 signed a contract to develop a turret with the new weapon with Rheinmetall-Borsig in mid 6/1941.
The company introduced a new 7.5 cm calibre gun. It was based on the 7.5 cm PaK 44 gun with a conical barrel, but used a conventional barrel. The original prototype had a barrel length of L/60 and this gun was capable of penetrating 100 mm armour inclined at an angle of 30° up to 1,400 metres. A further development produced a gun with a barrel extended to L/70. This gun was later used to arm the medium tank Panther. On 11 February 1942, the company presented a design for the VK 45.01 (Rh) turret with a 7.5 cm Kw.K. 42 gun, which was to be mounted on the VK 45.01 (H) platform. VK 45.01 (H) with Rheinmetall-Turm mit 7,5cm Kw.K. L/70 was given the official designation Pz.Kpfw by WaPrüf 6 on 1.7.1942. VI H Ausf. H2. As part of the long-term plans for tank production (Panzerprogramm II), it was planned that the Tiger tank with the 8.8 cm gun would only be produced in a series of the first 100 machines, starting with 101. The Tiger tank was to be produced with the Rheinmetall-Borsig turret (7.5 cm Kw.K. 42 L/70). At the Panzerkommission meeting of 14.7.1942 it was decided not to introduce this design modification. The plans were that by the end of 1942 the Tiger 8.8 cm Kw.K. L/71.
One demonstration mock-up was produced.
