In mid-1935, the firm Krauss-Maffei was commissioned by Baurat Dipl. Ing. Ernest Kniepkamp (WaPrüf 6) to draw up a number of design proposals for light tanks. The specifications called for fast tanks. To meet this requirement, the use of large running wheels without supporting pulleys, the use of torsion bars, the use of new small engines with increased power outputs, the use of modern semi-automatic transmissions and new control units were required. The chassis designs were to make use of structural elements from the semitrailer tractors with which the company Krauss-Maffei had extensive experience.
The first design was a 3-ton tank concept VK 3, which evolved into the conceptual follow-on VK 5. Development was then concentrated into the VK 6 programme.

The contract for the first design of the new 6 tonne tank was signed by WaPrüf 6 with Krauss-Maffei. The vehicle was to be powered by a Maybach HL 54 TRM engine, which was to enable the tank to move at a top speed of 67.5 km/h. The chassis was to consist of a set of four 700 mm diameter "non-translated" running wheels, and the tank was to move on Zpw 51/240/160 tracks (the same lubricated tracks with rubber pads were used by early versions of the Sd.Kfz.10 1-ton artillery tractor). The running wheels were suspended by torsion bars, the first and last wheel had a T 50 shock absorber. The WaPrüf 6 announced on 24 August 1939 that tests of the new platform would take place in 3-4 weeks. However, on 21.9.1939 the tests were cancelled due to technical problems. The planned tests were to be carried out in the future at Kummersdorf. Subsequently, newer specifications were commissioned and the development of VK 6 moved to the newer project VK 6.01.
