Slingsby Type 18 Hengist was designed according to the specifications of the X.25/40, which required transport glider able to transport 15 fully armed troops, the four prototypes were ordered in late 1940. První prototyp kluzáku Slingsby Hengist se sériovým číslem DG 570 byl dokončen počátkem roku 1942. Nesl proto ještě kamuflážní schéma staršího typu: na horních plochách nepravidelná pole tmavé zelené (Dark Green) a zemitě hnědé (Dark Earth). Spodní plochy byly žluté (Yellow Trainer). Stejnou barvou bylo vyvedeno písmeno P v kruhu na trupu - označení prototypu. Pozdější vyrobené kusy tohoto typu již nesly kamufláž novějšího typu, kde zemitá byla nahrazena tmavou šedou.
