The type was designed in 1944 and was also known as Type XXVII B5or also as Type 127. At least 138 ships were assigned to naval service and were designated U-5001 - U-5118 and U-5251 - U-5269. Around 1,000 units were ordered and were to be delivered by the end of 1944, which was not the case. At least 50 ships received larger fuel tanks which extended their range to the aforementioned 300 miles (normally it was around 180).
Production in 1944 yielded considerably less than the 1,000 machines ordered. There were 3 units produced in September 1944, 35 in October, 61 in November and 70 Seehunds in December. Then in the following year another 142 were produced. Seehunds sank 8 ships of 17301 tons displacement and damaged three others of 18384 tons displacement. their losses were 35 vessels this is the best score of all German minisubmarines.
Quite a few Seehunds have survived to the present day, they are on display in museums in Munich, Koblenz (hence my photos) in Speyer (in the neighbourhood of the better known Sinsheim) and in a number of other museums in France (Brest, Lorient) in Germany (Bremerhaven, Cuxhaven, Wilhelmshaven) and probably elsewhere.
