Štúrovo vojnový cintorín sovietskej armády z druhej svetovej vojny

Štúrovo war cemetery of the Soviet army from World War II

The town of Štúrovo, in the past also known as Parkan, lies on the left bank of the Danube on the Slovak-Hungarian border. It is surrounded by the Kovacs Hills with the maximum height of 395 metres above sea level, which is reached by the Burda Hill. The Hron River flows into the Danube River near the town.

During World War II, during the liberation of Štúrovo and the surrounding towns and villages, very heavy fighting took place between German, Hungarian and Soviet troops. In this context, it should be noted that the town of Štúrovo was liberated from the fascists for the first time on 28 December 1944 by Soviet soldiers of the 53rd Rifle Division with the support of the 27th Tank Corps of the 2nd Ukrainian Front.

On February 20, 1945, however, the town was again in the power of the 1st SS Division "Liebenstandarte A. Hitler" and 12. SS Division "Hitlerjugend" in the formation of the 1. SS Army Tank Corps.

The 7th Guards Army fought a protracted defensive battle for the Hron salient and retreated to the east bank of the Hron. The 6th Guards Tank Army was leaving for Hungary at that time and did not return to Slovakia. In the West Carpathian Operation, the main effort to liberate Slovakia began to shift to the troops of Marshal of the Soviet Union Rodion Yakovievich Malinovsky's 2nd Ukrainian Front.

Soviet troops of the 25th Guards Rifle Division of Colonel General M.S. Shumilov's 7th Guards Army from the 2nd Ukrainian Front had to fight fierce battles with the enemy, who wanted to stop the advance of the liberation troops near Sturova, from March 24, 1945. On March 28, 1945, with the combat cooperation of the units of the 83rd Marine Infantry Brigade of the Danube Military River Fleet, Štúrovo was finally liberated. The liberation of Štúrovo created the conditions for the liberation of Komárno and the advance to Nové Zámky.

These battles claimed considerable military and civilian casualties. About 4,000 Soviet soldiers were killed in the military operations to liberate Štúrovo.

The Soviet Army War Cemetery in Štúrovo on ul. St. Stephen was established in 1946 and the remains of 5247 fallen soldiers of the Red Army are buried there, either in individual graves or in common graves. The cemetery is dominated by a statue - a monument to a grieving mother.

The war cemetery has undergone several reconstructions in 1965, 1989-1994 and the last reconstruction was carried out in stages in 2007-2009, thanks to the efforts of Anna Belousovová, a member of the National Assembly of the Slovak Republic, through her civic association Pamätáme (We Remember). The finishing work on the war cemetery was done during the holidays by students from Slovakia, Russia and Belarus. The biggest financial support for the reconstruction was provided by the Russian Embassy. The total amount of the reconstruction of the cemetery and the memorial was 150 000,- Euros.

The cemetery is registered in the list of cultural monuments of Slovakia. The cemetery is taken care of by the municipality of Štúrovo through TSM m.p. Štúrovo and is freely accessible to the public.
