Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC) Wackett Bomber

In 1939, there was a critical shortage of high-performance aircraft in Australia. Due to the tense situation in Europe, supplies from the United Kingdom could not be counted on, and isolationist America, still proclaiming its neutrality, was also not considered a reliable source. Therefore, Wing Commander L.J. Wackett, the chief designer of the CAC and the driving force behind the Australian aerospace industry, decided to design an aircraft that could be produced locally. During the construction, he used some elements of the Wirraway training aircraft (outer part of the wings). The first takeoff of the CA-4 A23-1001 took place on September 19, 1941, and it seemed that the aircraft would meet the expectations of designers. However, ongoing tests still revealed new defects - inefficiency of the elevator, aircraft vibration at low speeds, engine overheating, difficult control of shooting ranges in engine nacelles. The modifications succeeded in mitigating some defects, but they were never completely eliminated. The end of the project came on January 15, 1943, when, during a test flight at an altitude of 300 m, the fuel escaping from the left engine ignited and caused an explosion. Only the pilot was saved from the three-member crew.
