Boeing XP-8 was the result of the efforts of the company Boeing meeting the specifications of the army air corps from may, 1925 for fighter aircraft using inverted inline engine. The prototype was built on the basis of the contract of lease, the machine thus remained the property of the company and the army provided the engine and armament. Company designation Model 66, XP-8 was based on a series of PW-9/FB, for the most part but this was a completely new machine. The wing was similar, but had about two feet shorter than the span, the lower wing was extended. The skeleton of the front part of the fuselage was welded from steel pipes, from the cockpit backwards was riveted duralumin, as well as the PW-9, only the reinforcing wires have been replaced by diagonal tubes. In addition to the engine was the main difference of the radiator, located under the fuselage in the middle of the lower wing. In the front chassis legs were all over pattern FB-2 olejopneumatické shock absorbers, which then have become the standard for the following Boeingovy design.

Boeing handed over the Model 66 the army in July 1927 and 14. July first flew, the designation of XP-8, however, got up after, what was the army purchased in January 1928. Ahead of him as the Model 93, or XP-7, which flew in September 1928, but he was with the army designation already ordered. The tests were rather disappointing, and the army did not recommend the introduction of serial production. The main reason was the engine, which still hasn't moved from the trial phase, he had problems with leakage and the water and oil would build up in the plugs. Some innovations in the design tested on the Model 66 were then at least used to XF2B-1, which is the serial production got. In the property of the army remained the XP-8 until June 1929, when he was on Wright Field eliminated. Probably wasn't scrapped, but converted under the ministry of trade, which it sold to a private owner, but he was never written what civil registry..
