Sd.Kfz.8 (gepanzerte)
A truly rare armored version of the 12-ton artillery tractor Sd.Kfz.8 is a vehicle recently found in the Polish river Pilica. The machine was designed to tow 8.8 cm anti-aircraft guns.
The machine was created only in a few prototypes on the chassis Sd.Kfz.8. The armor protection consisted of 10-12 mm armor plates. Differences between test vehicles can be identified from the surviving photographs. One of the prototypes had a pair of doors in the rear of the fuselage, while another prototype or production vehicles had four doors. There are several figures on the number of vehicles built. Some sources say that three machines were built, others claim that a small series of these artillery tractors was built. Some vehicles found themselves in anti-aircraft units on the Eastern Front. A Polish source claims that the wreck in the photo belonged to 20.Flak-Division.
The found vehicle was "drowned" during an attempt to transport it across the Pilica River on January 18, 1945. The Poles who pulled the wreckage of the vehicle out of the river and renovated the vehicle were named "Lufcik". Now this rare exhibit is in the collection of the museum in Tomaszów Mazowiecki (Poland). The vehicle serial number Fgst.Nr.441280 is a version of DB 10 made in 1943 in the factory Daimler-Benz.
