Charles Foulkes

was born on January 3, 1903 in Stockton-on-Tees, England. After several years of university studies, he joined the Canadian Permanent Forces in 1926 and served as a staff officer with the Royal Canadian Regiment. In 1937 he attended Staff College in Camberley, England. At the beginning of the war he was a major in the 3rd Infantry Brigade 1. Canadian Infantry Division. In September 1940 he was appointed 1st Level Staff Officer at 3. Canadian Infantry Division. Here, General Crerar noticed his abilities and made him brigade commander in August 1942. Exactly one year later, he joined the staff as a brigadier general 1. canadian army. In January 1944 he was appointed commander 2. Canadian Infantry Division and with this unit took part in the fighting in Normandy.

In November 1944 he was appointed commander I. Canadian Corps. He remained at the head of the unit during his presence on the Italian battlefield and then again during the liberation of the Netherlands, where on May 5, 1945 he took over the surrender of German troops. After the war, he was appointed Chief of Staff and in 1951 Chairman of the Committee of Chiefs of Staff. He left the service in 1960. For his services he received, among other things Order of Canada, Order of the Spa, Order of the British Empire or Order of Excellent Service. Charles Foulkes died on September 12, 1969 in Ottawa.
