George Kitching was born in 1910 in China. In the interwar period, he graduated from the Royal Military College in Sandhurst and then served in the British Army. However, in 1939 he joined the Canadian Army. From December 1942 he was a staff officer at 1. Canadian Infantry Division and from October 1943 worked at 5. Canadian Armored Division. In November of the same year, he commanded the 11th Infantry Brigade. In February 1944 he was appointed commander 4. Canadian Armored Division. The division arrived in Normandy in July and took part in Operation TOTALIZE and TRACTABLE, as well as the siege of German troops at Falaise.

Kitching was accused of slow progress, which allowed a number of German troops to escape the impending siege, and was removed from command. He then served as a brigadier general in the staff I. Canadian Corps. Even after the war, he worked as a staff officer. In 1986, he published his memoirs under the title Mud and Green Fields. He died in 1999.
