In April 1931, Curtiss P-6A 29/260 on Wright Field equipped with engine V-1570-23 with turbocharger General Electric F-2E, located on the right side of the bow. On the opposite side of the bow was a large oil cooler. The main condenser remained ethylene glycol. This machine was given the designation XP-6D, and after the completion of tests, the reconstruction of other machines was ordered. As with P-5, performance at low altitude deteriorated, speed on at sea level it decreased to 276.8 km/h, but at an altitude of 3048 m it increased by 305.8. XP-6D was rebuilt back to P-6A, and for conversion to P-6D was chosen nine P-6 and three P-6A, conversions took place between February and August 1932. These machines differed from the prototype in large part only by a three-bladed adjustable propeller.

After operational tests at the 37th Fighter Squadron at Langley Field, most of the P-6D were deployed as high-altitude fighters at the 1st Fighter Group at Selfridge Field. The turbochargers were not very reliable, so no other machines were ordered, new or rebuilt. The P-6Ds were phased out during 1937, the last in April 1938.
