Note:
Note:
If it was used a standard charge of 7,92x57 Mauser, the weapon had a low muzzle velocity (705 m/s) and armor-piercing bullet broke through the 5 mm armor at a distance of 100 m, it was later introduced a more powerful charge In-Patron. A new hub design to increase the muzzle velocity of 760 - 790 m/s and penetrated the armour of the tl. 17 mm at a distance of 50 m, with a new charge has also been achieved cadence 1 600 shots/min. Feed system Belt-fed
Muzzle velocity of only 705m/s (when using the standard 7.9 mm Mauser - ammo of the MG 34 and MG 42) ammo with sS projectile; with the stronger V-Patrone it reached between 2,493 and 2592 ft/s depending on projectile type; the high rate of fire of 1,600 rounds/min was not unproblematic for field use.

In leading the German way of fighting, the so-called Blitzkrieg, played an important role in the German Air Force, the main bombers. Various types of machine guns were produced to protect them from fighters. In 1938, a type was introduced that in many respects surpassed the then aircraft machine guns, but still remains in their shadow. It is a German MG 81 machine gun. It was manufactured by the Mauser Werke factory, primarily for the needs of the Luftwaffe.
The machine gun was originally 600 mm long, but was gradually shortened to 475 mm. The change had a positive effect on the increase in cadence, which after shortening reached 1,600 rounds per minute.

The weapon did not have a classic bolt but instead had a metal eye, which had to be pulled before firing. The cartridge belt of the 17/81 model functioned as a magazine. To increase fire protection, Mg 81Z-Zwilling versions (twins) were installed in the aircraft. It was a pair of machine guns, which had the main axes 56 mm apart. The twins had a problem with the oscillation of the weapon complex. The problem was solved by modifying the return springs.

The MG 81 also found application in the ground forces. Its advantage over other infantry machine guns was lower weight. The weight of the weapon itself was 6,500 grams, after mounting the shoulder rest and tripod, the weight increased to 9,540 grams. For comparison, the MG 42 weighed 11,600 grams.
However, due to its high cadence, the barrel overheated quickly and its replacement was not as fast as the MG 42.

The MG 81 is a type of machine gun which, despite being forgotten, was a successful and technically high-quality type of aircraft machine gun.
