In 1935 to a series of accidents forced to the argentine armed forces began to pursue the modernisation of its fleet, largely consisting of even Dewoitiny D.21 and D.25 and Breguety 19. A mixed commission composed of representatives of the military air force and the navy made available the sum of 22 million pesos, and received bids from ten companies from around the world - Chance Vought, Blériot, SPW, Seversky, Curtiss-Wright, Koolhoven, Fokker, Fiat, North American and Breda. For various reasons, but at the base of El Palomar arrived only Vought V-143 and the Curtiss Model 78 Hawk IV.

The Hawk IV was the last attempt of the company to modernise its best, but the old series of fighter aircraft Hawk, which was established in 1924. It was basically a slightly modified Hawk III, with the engine optimized for greater height and especially with a redesigned back and a fully covered cabin, whose cover was odsouvatelný backward. It was a very strange mixture of elements - retractable landing gear and a covered cabin, all-metal fuselage, wooden wings and dvouplošné arrangement... Competitor from the company Vought was already, however, as the monoplane representative of the following generation of fighter aircraft. During the flight tests in September 1936 Vought V-143 prevailed in all respects and received 87,7 points from 69,5, which won the Hawk, but he was eventually dismissed, because the parent company granted permission to test the machine without the use of protivývrtkového parachute. In December 1936 Argentina demonstrator Hawk IV bought, while Vought has returned home. Other machines, however, purchased not, instead, was promulgated a new bankruptcy. In it, he played with the successor to the Voughtu 141 even the representative of the brand-new series Hawk, the monoplane Hawk 75H. He already had won the contract.

The Hawk IV was přidělěn air regiment 2, fighter group 1, which has already used its predecessor, Hawk III. His career was but short, 20. April 1937 may surpassed the previous south american record in the dostupu, 26. October of the same year was destroyed in a crash on the range la Hullera, which killed his pilot Myr. J. Capella. During its argentine service Hawk IV něsl the same coloring as the Hawks III, thus coating the aluminum paint on all surfaces and hull number 12. Armament probably formed the 7.65-mm machine gun Madsen, accompanied by a second machine gun of the same manufacturer, but the caliber of 11.35 mm.
