Major Leverett's combat report from October 9, 1943, when he shot down 7 Stukas.
Bill Leverette was subsequently awarded for this action. The commander of the 14th Fighter Group, Colonel Oliver B. "Obie" Taylor wrote:

"Bill's action that day set a record on that battlefield for which he received the Distinguished Service Cross. I was most successful in trying to convince XII Bomber Command that Bill should receive the Medal of Honor. Of course, the Cross itself was subject to meeting very strict requirements and was itself rare."

Fifty years after that event, Bill Leverette found out from a former squadron mate that his Thirty-seventh flew into action that day with only 350 .50 caliber rounds per barrel as opposed to the standard 500. This was because when a certain amount of the prescribed amount of ammunition was fired, the weight of the ammunition belt and the overload in combat were such that jamming occurred. To compensate for this, wooden blocks were placed at the bottom of the ammunition boxes to limit the amount of ammunition carried.

Bill lamented, "I shot down seven Stukas, that's about 50 rounds (per barrel) per kill. If I had 150 more rounds (per barrel), I would have gotten three more kills, at least.
