Report of William T. Whisnera about combat of 21. November 1944 (5. up to 10. a separate shoot)
Battle report
Kapt. William T. Whisner
action Type: Martial
Date: 21. November 1944
Unit: 487. fighter squadron
Time: 12:30-12:50
the Location and height: southwest of the Mersebergu, 25 000 feet
Weather: a thick layer of fog from 18 000 to 20 000 feet
Type NL: the FW 190
enemy losses: 6 destroyed FW 190 and 1 probably destroyed a FW 190
Description:

I Led the green squadron of 8 aircraft, col. Meyer led black squadron. Join us black 3 and 4 and has a squadron of black became 3, 4, 5 and 6.
At approximately 1225, I saw a cluster of more than 50 enemy aircraft, chasing the last box of bombers, which have already abandoned the goal. We climbed to 23, 000 feet and headed for the enemy, přibližujíc to them from the rear at a height of 29 000 feet. Owner. Preddy the head of the 5 cars from the 328. squadron, was close behind us.
More than 20 enemy aircraft flew in a tight formation, and 6 triples flew as top cover. These covering squadrons were spread out above, around the sides and behind the main formations. As we approached from behind, so the top cover started esíčkovat (fly from side to side). I identified them as Fw 190 and I saw that they all had podvěšené additional tanks.
Col. Meyer told me to take the renegade to the right in the back of the main formation. When I got closer, so the formation turned about 45° to the right and the renegade is once again joined the formation. Fired right here on the 190 short burst from 400 yards. I used the K-14 (american gyro gun sight, allowing for accurate hanging on the aviation target, approx. translator), but nespozoroval here for any interference. Approached here at 200 yards and the dose framed the entire target. Blew away large pieces of the airframe, steaming and burning went into a spiral. I approached for more and a good deal, I hit it from 150 yards out and blasted some pieces. Rewound to the right and I hit him again from a distance of 100 yards or less, with hanging 15° or 20°. Again flew apart and he fell into a flat spin. I saw, passing through a layer of fog still steaming in a spin. In this ukamžiku it seemed as if the enemy was scared. I saw the two of them to separate and fall in frantic evasive action. I didn't intend to follow them, but stay behind the formations. Approached a three-member squadron, which flew virtually next to each other in a row with intervals of about 50 yards. I put the reticle on the commander, but before I opened fire, he bent his bow to the ground. I was almost between the remaining two. Sharply, I leaned to the right and then to the left and hit the guy on the right from less than 100 yards. He took off from him the pieces and went into a flat spin, in the smoke and flames. I relied on their number, lt. Waldron, he gets the guy on the left and it did not disappoint me. I saw hit the 190, which began nekontrovaně decline and smoking. Approached I for the other 190, which turned from left to right. He saw me and he sharply turned right. Cut him down and struck him over the entire length with hanging 15° - 20° from a distance of 200 yards, or less. Went perpendicular to the ground in smoke and flames and disappeared in the fog. In that moment I saw how the other 190 goes down in flames. It got my number. I made a 180° turn to the right and while I watched him, I've lost your number. The main structure 190 was still intact, but only 2 machines have remained as top cover. Blew up everything and I caught surprisingly quickly. I chose the last, and fired at him from 300 yards. I was slightly below him and behind him, but due to the large condensation here seen any interference. Passed into the narrow corkscrew and went under me. I lay claim to him as a probable. I was at that moment very close to the main formation. I chose one of them and began to shoot from 200 yards. He was completely framed by a fire and passed into the fall. He turned back and watched as they crumbled into several pieces. I think his auxiliary tank exploded. In the meantime, none of the 190 didn't just dump the extra tank. I had plenty of time to plan the attack and those tanks of them have made a very vulnerable target. As I fired at the last one, so the main structure dropped the tank and fell towards the left. I followed them, but lost in the fog. As I pulled up, I saw behind three 190. So I built the airplane on the tail and disappeared them. In the approximately 25 000 feet I saw the 190 on my tail P-51. Attacked here and fired at her with the hanging of 100 yards. How I got in his flight path flew my dose. Tied the score and of less cant here him hit from 50 yards. My barrage hit him in the cockpit and the engine. Fairing flew off along with other great pieces. He went straight to the ground with a burning and smoking engine. Me and my number, we join here to the colonel. Meyer and we went away.
The individual parts of this report are true and correct, but I'm not sure of their sequence (except the last 190 and the likely).
