I am attempting to research my Grandfather Czeslaw Tarkowski ("Tarkow") from Lublin.

He studied at Deblin in 1939 (XIII Deblin)

I do not have any information at the moment on his escape from Poland via Romania - he did mention being injured.

All I know is of a train journey where a guard stopped the train and allowed the Polish Officers off before it came to a military checkpoint. Other than that I have no information until he arrived in the UK.

I know that he was re-training at the time of The Battle of Britain.

He joined RAF 605 (County of Warwick) squadron as a fighter pilot.

On the 8th of November 1940 he was shot down by a Me109 over Kent

"P/O Czesław Tarkowski, who was shot down on 8 November 1940 in a Hurricane and landed on an oak at Sissinghurst Court. The owner was reputedly a WWI pilot. Tarkowski was actually taken as a German, and the mistake was realised only when he told the folks to f... off. "

His bailout got him membership of the Caterpillar Club.

His buried plane was found years later by the Battle of Britain Historian Ted Sergison who presented him with a plaque made from the fuselage.

He spent some time at 58 OTU in Grangemouth, Scotland, before joining 315 Squadron (15th Dec 1941 until 10th Sep 1943)

I'm not sure where he retrained as a night fighter in Beaufighters and Mosquitoes but his next move was to 307 squadron.

As far as I am aware he flew bomber escorts and may have also been a pathfinder.

On the 3rd/4th of March 1945 he shot down a JU 188 over Germany - Approximately 15 miles W.N.W. of Bonn. (his navigator was F/O Taylor)

I know he was involved in the liberation of The Channel Islands in 1945 as he has a Liberation Medal - however I have no information on this action (I'm assuming that this was with 307 Squadron)

Post War he stayed with the RAF/PAF

In 1948 he moved to Pakistan to fly with the fledgling Pakistan Air force (with about 30 other Polish Pilots )

He became a commercial pilot in 1949 with Orient Airways in Pakistan.

Over the years he was based throughout the British Empire as a commercial Pilot.

He finished working as a pilot in Libya in 1981

His UK home was in Hythe Kent where he passed away in 2001

I must also mention that my God Mother was Virginia Cherrill (Lady Jersey) "Mama" to 315 Squadron. She later married Florian Martini from 317 Squadron. They both moved to Santa Barbara USA after the War. I was lucky enough to visit them a few times before they passed away.

I am looking for any archive material on Deblin, the escape routes from Poland in 1939, the Polish Air Force in France 1940, 605, 315, 317 (for F Martini) and 307 Squadrons, Lady Jersey, The Channel Islands Liberation, The Pakistan Air force 1948/1949 and finally any information relating to post war commercial airlines.
