Development of the new medium tank began in October 1932 and continued in 1933. The Reichswehr High Command contracted the development of the "heavy tractor" to Rheinmetall-Borsig and Krupp. In October 1933, the vehicles under development received the designation Neubaufahrzeug. The Rheinmetall version, produced in two pieces in 1934, was assigned the designation "Ausf. A" and the three Krupp vehicles produced in 1935 were assigned the designation "Ausf. B". The prototypes of the tanks were similar not only in appearance, dimensions, but also in armament.

It is very difficult to distinguish between the chassis of the two mutations. The easiest way to distinguish the vehicles is by the different appearance of the turrets, which differed in shape and arrangement of the weapons. The Rheinmetall turret was equipped with superimposed guns, the top 3.7 cm KwK L/45 and the bottom 7.5 cm KwK L/24. To the right of the turret's longitudinal axis was a separate ball bearing gun fitted with a 7.9 mm MG 13 (later MG 34). The Krupp turret had the guns stacked side-by-side, with a 3.7 cm KwK L/45 to the left of the turret's longitudinal axis, and a 7.5 cm KwK L/24 slightly to the right of the turret's longitudinal axis. The 7.9 mm MG 13 (later MG 34) turret gun was separately stacked in a ball tray to the right of the larger gun.

In Western literature and on websites, these tanks are known by the fictional designation for the Rheinmetall vehicles: Neubaufahrzeug Pz.Kpfw.V and for Krupp vehicles: Neubaufahrzeug Pz.Kpfw.VI. THIS IS AN ERRONEOUS FIGURE!!! This fallacy was created by German newspaper reports about the war in Norway.

According to Mr. Thomas L. Jentz, all five chassis were designed by Rheinmetall, only the turret development was done separately. The differences in the reported outline dimensions of the two prototypes and the three test combat vehicles can be attributed to individual differences found during the technical inspection at the acceptance of each vehicle.

As part of the Nazi propaganda, one unit with a Krupp turret made it to the Berlin Internationale Automobil- und Motorrad-Ausstellung, where it was an exhibit from 17 February to 5 March 1939.

The deployment of prototype tanks in the fighting in Norway

Panzer Abteilung zur besonderer Vervendung 40 (hereafter Pz.Abt.z.b.V.40) was deployed to combat on 9 April 1940. Its battalions 1 and 2 went to Denmark, while the 3rd Battalion sailed to the shores of Norway on the transport ships Urundi and Antaris H. Only Urundi reached her destination, and she landed one each Pz.Kpfw.I and Pz.Kpfw.II in Oslo on 17 April. The rest of the armament carried by the Antaris H - kl.Bef.Pz.I, 12 Pz.Kpfw.I, 6 Pz.Kpfw.II and other material - went down in the North Sea, after being hit by a torpedo fired from a British submarine.

In an attempt to replace the losses, the German command sent a platoon-sized military unit to Norway, armed with Nbfz. tanks - machine numbers 3 to 5. These were the only three vehicles made of armoured plate and fitted with the more modern Krupp turret. The unit was commanded by Lieutenant Hans Horstmann. This unit was also known as Panzerzug-Horstmann, or Zug-Putloss. The reinforcement unit arrived in Oslo on 19 April and was only used for propaganda during the first phase of the fighting. It is claimed that after this German action, Allied intelligence headquarters began using the names Neubaufahrzeug Panzerkampfwagen V (Rheinmetall turret) and Vi (Krupp turret) for these tanks. From 20 April, the unit joined the fighting at the Norwegian town of Hamar as part of Pz.Abt.z.b.V.40, which was under the command of the 196th Infanterie-Division.

Two of the tanks remained with Pz.Abt.z.b.V.40, while the third piece was assigned to Gruppe-Pellangahr. On 25 April a tank assigned to Gruppe Pellangahr was damaged near the settlement of Kvam during fighting with British-French intervention troops, namely the 1st Battalion of Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. As the British unit had no anti-tank weapons of its own, it was allocated five 25mm anti-tank guns of the Hotchkiss system. The Yorkshire Light Infantry held their position until the evening of 26 April. The author of this information, Mr Simon Orchard, claims that the above gun and the remains of a German tank were still to be seen in the 1980s in the village museum and in the field near the village of Kvam.

The tanks that remained with Pz.Abt.z.b.V.40 fought in the Åndalsnes area. Here, one of the machines went off the road and crashed into the marshy ground. Unable to extricate it, it was blown up by German engineers. On 16 May 1940, Pz.Abt.z.b.V.40 received a replacement for the destroyed vehicle - one of the Rheinmetall prototypes made of mild steel.

After the surrender of the Norwegian Army, Pz.Abt.z.b.V.40 was garrisoned in Oslo at Fort Akershus and only in the winter of 1941-1942 was it transferred to Finland and in 1943 subordinated to the 25th Panzer-Division.

Further fate of the Neubaufahrzeug

German sources published on internet addresses are rather contradictory. One source says that the Nbfz. tanks were placed under von Kleist's command and incorporated into the 1st Panzer-Gruppe. When the war with the Soviet Union began, one of them was destroyed near Dubno on about 28 or 29 June 1941. Another source claims that two tanks of this type were destroyed near the Romanian-Soviet border in June 1941. There is also allegedly information that two machines returned to Germany in November 1941. Perhaps the only tangible evidence are photos from the Krupp factory - allegedly from 1942 - where one of the Neubaufahrzeug (probably Nr.1) is being repaired together with Pz.Kpfw. III and several StuG. III.

The Neubaufahrzeug were judged unsuitable for combat even though they provided effective fire support to the infantry in many cases.

I will correct the information regarding the unpanted prototypes. The chassis were of course made by Rheinmetall, but only the first prototype (#1) was equipped with the Rheinmetall turret. The second prototype (No. 2) had a Krupp turret fitted.

Thomas L. Jentz, Hilary Louis Doyle - Panzer Tracts No. 4 Panzerkampfwagen IV - Grosstraktor to Panzerbefehlswagen IV -, year of publication 1997, ISBN: 0-9648793-4-4

In 2/1940, Germany began planning an operation to capture Denmark and Norway (Operation Weserübung). For this operation, a tank battalion Panzer-Abteilung z.b.V. 40 was prepared with three companies of light tanks. The 1st Company and the 2nd Company Panzer-Abteilung z.b.V. 40 were used together with the unit's headquarters in the operation in Denmark, the 3rd Company was from the beginning intended to be used in Norway. There were a trio of Neubaufahrzeug Ausf. B, at the time classified as medium tanks.

The commander of the unit was Oberleutnant Horstmann ("Zug Horstmann" or "Kampfgruppe Horstmann"). Tank No. 9 had the additional code "Z" and tank No. 10 had the additional code "R". The tanks appear to have had elephant heads painted on the front armour of the tub in front of the driver. The whole platoon was nicknamed "Elefantengeschwader" (elephant squadron) (see the inscription on No. 9 in Aalborg: "Greetings home from the three elephants in the squadron/flight").

The photographs show the crews of tanks Nos. 8 and 9 in the harbour Stettin on 16 April 1940.
The tanks were loaded onto the ship Buenos Aires.
On 18.4.1940 they arrived at the port of Oslo and were unloaded from the ship on the morning of 19.4.1940.
Immediately after unloading they were deployed for combat on 19.4.1940. The tanks reached the area of operations with the support of the 196th Infanterie-Division. The platoon was divided. Tanks 8 and 9 were assigned to Task Group Pellenghar, and tank 10 was assigned to Task Group Fischer (the tanks were given this number designation during training in Putlos, but no longer had these numbers in Norway). The tank crews knew that the tanks were only partially safe; their armour protection was inadequate against modern anti-tank weapons. Although no such weapons were expected in Norway, they were always used with caution. During the first encounters, the tanks suffered several shells from English anti-tank rifles.

Tank No. 9 was not used in combat, as it had already had its left centre bogie with running wheels damaged on 22 April 1940. The cause was an overload when bypassing the broken bridge on the Holt. The tank was parked on the outskirts of Mölv. In addition, earlier, Tank No. 9 had overloaded its engine while towing Tank No. 8 at Holt, resulting in irreparable damage. On 22.4.1940 at about 10:30 a.m., Tank No. 9 was towed to Mölv station. It was still standing there on 24.6.1940. It was loaded onto freight wagons in the Norwegian harbour (see attached photo). On 29.6.1940 it was unloaded in Aalborg, Denmark, and was subsequently taken to Berlin to Alkett for repairs. In 12/1940 the tank received a Notek searchlight.

Tanks 8 and 10 took part in the fighting at Lillehammer and Elverum from 22/4/1940 together with 196th Infanterie-Division.
Tank No. 10 first encountered British troops directly at Balberg (7 km north of Lillehammer) on 22 April 1940.
Tank No. 8 was used in the Battle of Kvame. A photograph that appeared in 8/2018 shows that the tank was supplied with ammunition about 800 meters from the entrance to Kvam on 25/4/1940. The first artillery shells landed on the hillside above Kvam. British reports from the front state that shortly after 2pm on 25/4/1940 the tank opened fire on the main street in Kvam against British infantry and three anti-tank guns under the command of Corporal Stokes. At the station it had to stop at two stone roadblocks. The tank's distance to the British anti-tank guns was about 500 yards. According to the German combat report, the tank took a hit and could no longer fire. The original report of the British commanding general confirms that Tank No. 8 was hit by a shell from a 25 mm Hotchkiss anti-tank gun. Another shot hit the driver, Unteroffizier Lührig, so that he succumbed to his injuries later in the night. Feldwebel Faulhaber was hit in the back by a machine gun at around 22:30 hours and also succumbed to his injuries. The anti-tank gun was subsequently destroyed by German troops. Tank No. 8 could not be repaired and was blown up on the spot by German troops. The remains of this tank can still be seen in the museum in Kvam. An unarmored prototype No. 2 was used as a replacement for tank No. 8. Tank No. 2 arrived by ship in Oslo on 6.5.1940.

Tank No. 10 took part in the fighting at Tretten on 23.4.1940. At the head of a small column of tanks, the vehicle overturned at the head of a retreating column of British vehicles. On 27.4.1940 the fighting ceased and the tank was able to undergo servicing repairs. According to British sources, it was used in the fighting at Otta (25 kilometres north of Kvam) on 28.4.1940.

After the end of combat operations, the trio of tanks were in Oslo and returned to Germany before 7.10.1940. Tank No. 9 was sent to the armoured units school in Putlos.

Oberstleutnant Volckheim stated in his summary report that the "Panzerkampfwagen IV Neubau" proved excellent in combat in mountainous areas. Their weapons provided all-round defence and the tanks also coped well with all kinds of terrain. He criticized the poor replenishment of spare parts because wheels, V-belts and brake pads were repeatedly missing. Tank No 10 was the least affected by the breakdowns.

The tanks were used significantly in the propaganda campaign (in the propaganda film The Battle of Norway).

However, the source above, which probably has the best described history of this tank supported by a quantum of literature and sources, describes the fantastic fate of individual tanks after deployment in Norway, which were supposed to be turned into some kind of anti-aircraft vehicles (Kugelblitz), or fought and lost as late as 1944 in Waffen SS units. Given that this information is clearly unsourced I consider this data to be a mixture of misinformation and phantasmagoria, which the writer of the German wikipedia probably uncritically took from dubious sources and discussions.

The deployment in Operation Barbarossa 1941 is mentioned only on the basis of the recollections of G.I. Peněžko (Григорий Иванович Пэнэжко), who in his book (Записки советского офицера) described an encounter with a pair of new tanks on 28.6.1941, which he named "Rheinmetall". Most likely, however, it was Pz.Kpfw. IV. Considering that he was supposed to fight on a small T-37 (other sources and Penezko himself say BT-7M), he certainly Pz.Kpfw. IV seemed huge. In his memoirs, where he identifies the attacking tank(s) as "Rheinmetall" he mentions the destruction of one or two "Rheinmetalls" by the crew of a fellow "KV" tank and the subsequent flight of the remaining "Rheinmetalls" from the battlefield. Neubaufahrzeug was known to the Soviets, its approximate depiction even appeared on a Soviet postage stamp. It is quite possible that the Soviets even inspected it (in spring 1941 ?), although one can find info that they did not get to inspect it. There is a photo in this thread where one/two soldiers (probably) in Soviet uniforms are photographed in front of Neubau. Therefore, this propaganda exploited tank may have ended up in Soviet recognition manuals (parallel to the propaganda success of the He-100 vs. He-113). And the confusion could have happened, of course. In the plethora of internet and print articles about this deployment of Neubaufahrzeug tanks during the attack on the USSR, a German source is also mentioned. As a rule, only a vague source, which can only be an interpretation of the mentioned memoirs of G.I. Penezek, who published his memoirs for the first time in 1947. The deployment in the USSR is also illogical. A tank of two (armoured) or three pieces (one of which had to be unarmoured) has no standard options for inclusion in the German army. Already the deployment in Norway was logistically problematic and the tank was obsolete. Not to mention that German official records make no mention of this tank and its deployment in Operation Barbarossa.

The fate of the tanks is unclear (that is, unless you take the information from the source above as relevant). Probably they served as some kind of training or as targets on firing ranges. There is information about their scrapping in 1942. Other sources deny this and state that it was a confusion with the Grosstraktor tanks.
