Franz Hinterstoisser was born 28. April 1863 in Aigenu when Salzburg in the family of a forester. In 1886 he graduated from Engineer cadet in the Hainburgu and he joined as a cadet to Ženijnímu regiment, where he was in 1889 transferred in the rank of lieutenant to the Railway regiment. In 1890, learned to drive the ball, as in Prateru Victor Silberera graduated from the military vzduchoplavecký course, the first of its kind in the Austro-Hungarian empire. In the years 1892-1893 he served in the Military technical committee. Reich ministry of war was assigned to in the Berlin and Munich studied the issue of military airships and even the issue of the organization of the military vzduchoplavectva.

After his return he worked on the preparations for the founding of the viennese Military vzduchoplaveckého institute. In the years of 1894 and 1897 he led together with Josef Triebem vzduchoplavecký course and subsequently in the years 1897-1903 he was commander of the Military vzduchoplaveckého institute. In the years 1903 to 1907 he served in the Infantry regiment no 90. He then returned back to the head of the institute, and in 1907 did a test authorising the driving of a balloon and in the following year, tests on the airship. In the function he remained until the year 1912, that means even after its change to the Department of airships in 1909. In 1913 he went to advance. In 1915 he was reactivated and the backup is returned in the rank of colonel.

Hinterstoisser participated in the establishment of the first flight schools, and airports (the first was in Wiener neustadt. He was a member of the Permanent international commission for vzduchoplavectví in Paris and co-founder, in the order of the first vice-president and an honorary member of the Vienna, later Austrian aero club and a member of the Association for air technique. During his life he performed more than 150 flights in a balloon, for which he received the gold Sports medal. The interesting thing is that his wife Josefine received for carried out balloon flights the same medal in silver. Hinterstoisser received many other honours. Since 1967, carries a military air base in the Zeltwegu his name.
