Adna Romanza Chaffee the elder was born on 14. April 1842 in Orwellu in the state of Ohio. With the outbreak of the american civil war, he enlisted in the army to 6. cavalry regiment, with which he went through the various battles and campaigns. He has participated in, for example, battle of Antietam, the battle of Fredericksburg, battle of Gettysburg, the battle of Fairfield county or the campaign in the Shenandoah valley. Total passed six dozens of battles, was several times wounded, he showed himself to be very capable soldier, and from the rank of private ascended up to the rank of lieutenant. After the war he served in the supply services in Austin, texas.
In 1867 he retired from the army and wanted to attend to business, but after a short time back and still in the same year he was promoted to the rank of captain and transferred to Fort Griffin. Here you have successfully led in action against part of the Comanche tribe, and was promoted to the temporary rank of major. In the following years he served at various posts in Texas, where he participated in catching outlaws and hostile Indians. In 1874 he was because of his reputation assigned to a group of colonel Miles, who had the task to deal with Cheyenne. Chaffee led his men with such courage and skill that earned him a promotion to the temporary rank of lieutenant colonel. Subsequently he was transferred to arizona to Fort Verde, where for a change he faced the Apaches, including the group around the chief, Geronimo. In July 1888 he was promoted to the proper rank of major and reassigned to the 9th. cavalry regiment, which was one of two black cavalry units. In his post he oversaw the construction of Fort Duchesne in southern Utah. He held various positions in the military administration in Colorado and Arizona. He participated in the solution of the indian question in Nebraska.
In the years 1896-1897 he served as an instructor at infantry and cavalry school in the kansas Fort Leavenworth. Subsequently, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel and transferred to the 3. cavalry regiment. When in 1898 broke out, the Spanish-american war, was the Chaffee promoted to the rank of brigadier general and commanded the 3. brigade in Lawtonově 2. the division of the volunteer army in Cuba. After the successful conquest of El Caney was promoted to the rank of major general. After the war in Cuba he served in 1900 as chief of staff of the military government of general Wood. In 1899 he was promoted to the proper rank of colonel, however, already in the following year he was again promoted to the temporary rank of major general, as he assumed command of the american contingent, which was sent to China to suppress the boxer rebellion. Chaffee here has successfully reached Beijing, which won him great recognition. In 1901 he was promoted to the proper rank of major general and appointed commander of the military administration in the Philippines. Subsequently he commanded to 1903 the Eastern department.
In 1904 he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general and appointed chief of the general staff, in whose creation he participated. After two years he retired. He was 64 years, 45 of which he spent in uniform. Pension spending in Los Angeles, california, where he led the municipal commission of public works and was the first president of the Museum of the Southwest. General Chaffee died here 1. November 1914. It is worth noting that his son Adna Romanza Chaffee younger he also worked in the cavalry and became the father of american armored forces.
