Steyr 4K 7FA G 127

Development
The Steyr 4F 7FA G127 armoured personnel carrier is a continuation of the development of the older 4K 4FA G1/G2. It has improved armour protection, a more powerful power unit and an upgraded transmission. Development began in 1976 and the first prototype was built in the same year. Series production began in 1977 and has since been completed.

Designation
The armoured personnel carrier is intended to transport a mechanised squad to the place of execution of a combat task, to transport it around the battlefield, to protect the squad members from enemy infantry weapons up to 20 mm calibre and shrapnel from hand grenades, to protect against the effects of WMD or their reduction on the squad members, to destroy enemy resistance foci from on-board weapons and to provide fire support or cover fire for a mechanised squad operating on the open terrain of the battlefield.

Description
The armoured personnel carrier is very similar to the previous 4K 4FA type. The hull is welded from steel plates. Compared to the previous type, the armour has been reinforced up to 25 mm in the front part of the hull, allowing the crew to be protected from the effects of weapons up to 20 mm calibre. The driver's compartment is located on the left front of the hull. The engine compartment is located to the right of the driver's compartment. Just behind the driver's and engine compartment on the left is a turret with a 12.7 mm machine gun. The turret is equipped with armoured gunner protection on the sides and front. Four smoke grenade launchers are mounted just behind the gunner, allowing rearward firing. In the rear of the hull there is a fighting compartment for 8 members of the mechanized squad. They can get in and out of the vehicle through a two-part door in the rear of the hull. Members of the squad sit in groups of four in the centre of the fighting compartment facing the side walls of the hull. There is a two-piece hatch in the ceiling of the fighting compartment which swings out to the side. There are four trapdoors around the perimeter of the ceiling of the fighting compartment, which allow the rapid firing of light machine guns from the armament of the mechanized squad.
The chassis of the vehicle is based on the machine underframe of the previous type 4K 4FA. It differs only in the number of tension pulleys, which was increased from the original two to three on both sides of the hull in the Type 4K 7FA G127. It consists of five running wheels on both sides of the hull, suspended by torsion bars. The first and last running wheel is equipped with a hydraulic shock absorber. The drive wheel is at the front and the tensioning wheel at the rear. The tracks may be fitted with spikes to improve the vehicle's handling in deep snow. For driving on roads, the tracks may be equipped with rubber feet to reduce road damage.
The vehicle is powered by a 6-cylinder, water-cooled, diesel engine, supercharged by a Steyr 7FA turbocharger of 238 kw at 2,300 rpm. Torque transfer from the engine to the chassis is provided by a ZF GHP-600 fully synchronised mechanical transmission with 6 forward and 1 reverse gear. The engine and transmission are also used in the SK 105 KÜRASSIER tank fighter.
The main armament of the vehicle is a 12.7 mm M2HB machine gun mounted in a turret, with a 500 round capacity. Additional armament consists of 4 smoke grenade launchers, to create a smoke screen to covertly leave the battlefield. The vehicle's firepower can be further increased by mounting light machine guns from the mechanized squad's armament on four traps around the perimeter of the battlespace ceiling.
The vehicle is equipped with a WMD filtering device, a ventilation and heating system in the crew compartments, and the driver is equipped with a night vision device for night driving. At the user's request, the vehicle can be retrofitted with air conditioning, an automatic fire suppression system and an automatic transmission.

Versions and derivative types
The 4K 7FA-KSpZ MICV is an upgraded version with two ball gun turrets equipped with periscopes on either side of the hull, allowing the vehicle to fire from the battlespace while moving and during short stops.

The 4K 7FA MICV is essentially identical to the 4K 7FA-KSpZ MICV, and was additionally equipped with a single-man turret armed with a 12.7 mm machine gun coupled to a 7.62 mm machine gun. Only one prototype was produced.

The 4K 7FA FSCV 90 fire support vehicle equipped with a TS-90 GIAT turret with a 90 mm calibre gun. Only one prototype was produced.

The 4K 7FA MICV 30/1 version was equipped with a one-man turret with a 30 mm RADEN gun with a 7.62 mm machine gun. Only one prototype was produced.
