From 24. November 1915 into the 1. August 1917 he was commander of the naval air force.
The end of the war he bought the castle Freudenstein in the south tyrolean Alps in Bolzano (in the present Castel Lodrone), where he lived until his death in 1964. He married Elizabeth Piette – Rivage daughter Julia Piette.
