In 1934, representatives of the Iranian army were looking for a supplier of tanks. A survey of Vickers (UK), Renault (France) and Bofors (Sweden) was unsuccessful. The Iranians also turned to Czechoslovak companies. The firm Skoda failed with its Skoda Š-I offer, nor did the firm ČKD with its P-I (Tč vz.33) tank. In 1935, an offer for AH-IV was made to the Iranian delegation at their request. The Iranians promtne signed a preliminary order for 30 tanks on 14 May 1935 (together with the delivery of 26 tanks TNH). Work on the AH-IV prototype began immediately and was completed in 9/1935. In early 9/1935, the Iraqi delegation came to Prague again, where they cancelled the original contract and increased the number of tanks to 50. The Iranians formed an acceptance committee to oversee production. The AH-IV prototype bore the police registration number P-10.044. When the prototype was shown to the Iranian commission, the tanker carried no armament; later a ZB vz.35 heavy machine gun was armed in the turret.
The original AH-IV prototype differed from the production vehicles in several details. The biggest differences were that it had a different engine (Praga AH - Pejčoch or Praga AN - Francev) and had a low turret, which was replaced by a larger one for easier operation of the machine gun in the serial tanks. The serial machines received the more powerful Praga RH engine. The modified AH-IV bore the designations AH-IV-B or AH-IV-P (P - Persian). Due to problems with the quality of the armour plates and the need to fine-tune the engine used, production was a bit protracted. Despite the problems, however, deliveries of the tanks were made more or less on time. The first 12 tanks were shipped from the factory on 17.8.1936, the next 15 left on 21.9.1936 and 21 units on 3.11.1936. Along with these, a prototype was also shipped for training tasks. The remaining pair of tankers were not shipped out until 1937 (5/1937 ?) due to broken engines. Along with the tanks, company technicians went to Iran to assist in training and also to solve technical problems that arose during the introduction of the tanks. Gradually, the technical problems were resolved and the trade claims were settled. Further deliveries of tanks were envisaged, but due to military-political and economic problems, further negotiations were not successful.
Later in 1940 the Iranians retrofitted German radios from Telefunken. There is little information about the further fate of the Tanzanians in this exotic country. The tanks were to be in service until the late 1950s. In 1947, the Iranian side negotiated for the supply of spare parts, but the deal probably did not materialize. Interestingly, in 1948 (?) the Iranians air-tested the AH-IV-P in a British Bristol Type 170 Mk. 31M transport aircraft.

Diskuse

Gentlemen,
On Youtube and FB there are several links to a video called: testing of prototypes of light tank vz.38 and tank Praga. I would like to add a few comments to this video:
1/ The video below presents the testing of the prototype of the TNH tank design series and the prototype of the AH-IV turret tank design series.
2/ The tests of these two machines were carried out in the first half of the 1930s and took place on the factory polygon in the CKD premises located behind the electrical engineering and foundry buildings - see attachment.
3/ These vehicles became the serial versions of the TNH-P export tanks and AH-IV-P tanks for Iran (P for Persia).
4/ For the publicly available video, the author of the commentary, Karel Čáslavský of the NFA (now deceased), misidentified the vehicles.
5/ Tomas Jakl posted on FB a link to a private site with limited public access.
6/ Attachment - a bilingual video is commonly available - see attachment.
