T-72M3 CZ

Tanks T-72M3 CZ and T-72M4 CZ are Czech modifications of the Soviet medium tank T-72. The planned modernization was preceded by a research stage called "Modern", which had the task of finding out the possibility of effective modernization of the tank T-72. Most military technical institutes and the Military Repair Plant 025 under the leadership of the Military Technical Institute of the Ground Forces in Vyškov took part in this stage. Experimental models with French SAGEM and SFIM sights and with DYNA outboard dynamic protection were first presented at the IDET 94 military fair.

The development of the modernized version was started at the end of 1995 under the name "VETRA". VOP 025 Nový Jičín was designated as the system integrator of the project, because it is the only one in the Czech Republic to hold technical and repair documentation and has experience in the field of tank technology. The prototype T-72M3 was prepared by the end of 1997. A more complex modernization was represented by the type T-72M4 CZ (more expensive), which characterized by the improvement of all three basic characteristics of tanks (firepower, protection, mobility), compared to the M3 CZ version, where the mobility was left at the same level as the type T-72.

Both Czech modernized versions of the T-72 tank are armed with the original Russian cannon 2A46 and stabilizer 2E28M. The ammunition used is the original ammunition and a new sub-caliber cartridge with a projectile type APFSDS-T, which has a tungsten penetrator from the Israeli company IMI and a combustible cartridge Z 62 of the Czech company ALIACHEM division SYNTHESIA, which reloads 500 mm thick homogeneous armor at a distance of 2000 meters. Secondary armament includes anti-aircraft machine gun NSVT caliber 12.7 mm with a firing diameter of 720 rounds and a coupled machine gun PKT caliber 7.62 mm with a firing diameter of 2000 rounds. The accuracy of shooting and the ability to search for and destroy targets at night and under difficult meteorological conditions was significantly increased compared to the original standard T-72M installation of a new fire control system TURMS-T of the Italian company Officine Galileo. This SRP is based on the type OG14L3 TURMS, which is used in the tank C1 Ariete. The SRP includes the sight of the shooter and commander, a ballistic computer with backups and sensors.

The commander's sight is stabilized in two levels and is equipped with a day (magnification 4x and 12x) and day/night thermal imaging (magnification 5x and 13x) channel. It can also be equipped with a Nd-Yag type laser rangefinder.
The shooter's sight is stabilized in two planes and is equipped with the same thermal imaging channel and daily channel magnified 2.5x and 10x. It is equipped with a laser rangefinder type Nd-Yag with a range of 250 to 9995 meters with an accuracy of + 5m. Sighting allows you to identify the target during the day at a distance of at least 5000 meters and at night at a distance of 4000 meters. The SRP enables the Hunter-Killer function and, as with other modern tanks, the tank commander can fire at the target if he finds a target with a higher priority.
Other tank systems include the internal diagnostic system, the NBV-97 navigation system (combines a GPS satellite navigation receiver and an inertial navigation set), Mesit's internal communication systems (BCC 600 intercom) and external communication systems (station RF-1350, rádiokomplet RF-13 and amplifier ZV-13) compatible with NATO standards. The driver is equipped with a passive night vision device of the 2nd generation NV-3P.

The basis of the armor protection is the original design solution, which is equipped with composite armor in the exposed areas, and the front of the hull is armor with a layer of glass fiber reinforced plastic. Tank T-72M3/ T-72M4 is equipped with an additional dynamic armored type DYNA (43 - 44 blocks of various sizes at the front of the hull, 11 folded blocks at the front of the tower, 9 large and two smaller folding and one block above the machine gun, another 15 blocks are located on the ceiling of the tower and 2 on the sides of the tower), which provides increased protection against missiles of all types. This armored protection of the front of the hull, the tower, the front of the sides and most of the ceiling of the tower. The effective increase in protection is about 220% against cumulative ammunition in the area of the front of the hull and 300% at the front of the tower. These data apply to the hull and tower up to an angle of 20 ° resp. 35 ° from the longitudinal axis of the tank. In the area of the tower ceiling, the protection against cumulative ammunition is increased by 360%. The sides of the body are protected by rubber protective covers of the belts with a thickness of 10 to 20 mm, which help increase the resistance of the sides of the body against cumulative bullets by 200%. The protection of the crew against mines is increased by adjusting the bottom of the body of the emergency hatch under the driver and hanging his seat on the ceiling of the body.
The T-72M3/4 tank is equipped with a system of active protection of the "soft kill" SDIO tank of the Polish company PCO Warszawa. It integrates SCC-1 OBRA laser beam radiation detectors, which are arranged so that their area of action covers the entire area around the tank (2 at the front of the tower and 2 at the sides). The system cooperates with the main computer SRP and in case of irradiation ensures automatic or manual firing of masking smoke grenades DGO-1 dampening infrared radiation in the direction of irradiation. The tank is also equipped with a smoke generator.

The automatic fire protection system is a product of the German company Kidde Deugra. It contains a BUA fire protection device, in the crew compartment in the tower, with optical detectors and bottles with the ecological extinguishing mixture DeuGen. A similar system is provided for the driver's compartment (the detector is located in front of the driver). The indication of a fire in the engine compartment is solved by means of a detection wire stretched over the engine bulkhead. Information on the condition of the engine compartment is supplied in the automatic control box located in front of the driver.
To protect the tank from magnetic mines, the company Electra Blansko developed an electromagnetic trall, which creates a spare magnetic field and causes the initiation of magnetic mines in front of the tank and on its sides. Together with the mechanical demining system NBZ-90, it enables a relatively high speed of movement even in mined terrain. One of the components of passive protection is the new U 2500 masking coating with increased masking capabilities, a microwave absorber and a masking mat for thermal masking. The system of protection against weapons of mass destruction is original.
