They were designed for anti-submarine and anti-ship patrol activities & # 357 ;. They were created on the basis of Wellington Mk.IC and their original name was DWI Mk.III.
Special equipment included a searchlight and a radar ASV Mk.I or Mk.II.
Initial tests took place in 1941 with two prototypes. The first was modified Wellington DWI Mk.I (P9223), with retractable, rotatably positioned and remotely controlled Leigh Light reflector (emitting light focused in a narrow lane) at the site of the sub-hull turret. The second became rebuilt Mk.IC (T2977), from wide angle Helmore Turbinlite headlight in front of the fuselage. In both versions, the reflectors were powered by a generator driven by an internal combustion engine located in the fuselage.

Serial Mk.VIII (Vickers Type 429) started coming down & # 357; from the production line at the end of 1941.
The plant in Weybridge delivered a total of 394 aircraft (397 is also mentioned). Of this number, 54 (58) pieces were intended for night operations, equipped with a Leigh Light reflector and without a front turret, replaced by a transparent convex cover of the reflector operator's space. Without a reflector and with an increased capacity of fuel tanks, 49 machines were produced. Except for the first 65 aircraft produced, all subsequent Mk.VIIIs had modified the bombers to allow them to carry. a pair of 18-inch torpedoes.

The first operational squadron of the RAF with Wellington GR Mk.VIII became No 172. Sqn. Its first success using the Leigh Light reflector was the sinking of a German submarine U-502 ( Type IX C) 6.7.1942 in the Bay of Biscay, west of La Rochelle.
