This light tank ( sometimes referred to as a tank) was created in ČKD according to the requirements of the Romanian army for a light tank for cavalry. Modifications of the factory car according to the requirements of the Romanians were made on the basis of the requirement of 1.4.1936, and the company subsequently received an order for 35 pieces in August, the factory designation was AH-IVR ( R meant Romanian).

Compared to the original machine, the command dome on the top of the tower was removed and the armor was weakened from 15 mm to a maximum of 12 mm. Also the original Praga engine of 60 pcs was replaced by a weaker engine of the same type ( power of 50 pcs). The armament of two machine guns was preserved. With all this, the weight of an already light vehicle has been reduced by more than half a ton. This reduced vehicle wear and extended the range to 160 km.

Cars marked in Romania R-1 were included in the mechanized reconnaissance squadrons of cavalry brigades. Brigades 5th, 6th and 8th each received 6 pieces, Brigades 1st, 7th and 9th each received 4 pieces. The remaining 5 machines were in reserve and were also used for training. In the years 1941-42, the machines got into combat in the cavalry ([i 5th, 6th and 8th Brigade) in Ukraine and the Caucasus. They also fought at Odessa. After the disaster at Stalingrad, the remaining machines were taken out of active service and used for training.

Let me add a few details about the export tower tankette company FAQ:

1/
The said type AH-IV-R design came out from the serial of the export of the combat vehicle AH-IV-P (Persian, Iranian). In the ghost archive VHJ CKD Praha was stored in a cardboard 250, when the folder 1103, drawing with the designation of "Carul de fighting for R1". Although given did not match the prototype nor the later series of Romanian tančíků was with the following technical description equipped with data on the deployment of homogeneous and cementovaných armoured metal plates of thicknesses: 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 mm. The use of older versions of drawings that did not fully correspond to the appearance and the technical data later produced by vehicles, was not in conflict with the business policy of the FAQ and his design office SPE.

2/
The above weight corresponds to the term "nominal", which in this case was about 400 kg less than the fighting.

3/
Engine series Praga RH, probably RHR (motor series R with the adjustment of the caterpillar (tracked) vehicles in the version for Romania), in the original version had a reduced performance. On the contrary, according to archival documents, carton 243, folder 1070 and 1071, to. 250, col. 1103, and the German written documents from to. 361, sl. 1738, sheet 8, is specified: Engine four-stroke, petrol, water-cooled, the contents 3468 ccm, 6 cylinders, bore Ø 80 mm, stroke 115 mm, performance data, however, fluctuate in the values of 40.5 to 44,16 kW (55-60 hp) at 2500 revolutions per minute.

If the foreign materials cited lower performance, it is probably the local Romanian adjustment in order to save fuel.

4/
In the offers abroad, and their price calculations, there is also a variant of the little tank with a diesel engine of a number RND: four-stroke, water-cooled, the contents of the 4500 ccm, 4 cylinders, bore Ø 105 mm, stroke 130 mm, power of 40.5 kW (55 hp) at 2000 revolutions per minute.

5/
Tankette AH-IV-R (R-1) were the company FAQ offered as the first in the export, with a semiautomatic transmission system of the Praga-Wilson.

6/
Is known one machine with the commander's observation dome. Supposedly it is a product of the Romanian company Malaxa, assembled from spare parts. Gentlemen Victor Nita and Dragos Pusca about this machine says that is supposed to be a prototype of local license production. His photo can be found on the Romanian server: www.worldwar2.ro
