Joseph Déchelette


Joseph Déchelette was born in 1862 in Roanne, was the industrialist, but probably the most famous in the field of archaeology, and whether their publishing activities or research of the celtic settlement Bibracte. Of all his works it is necessary to mention the synthetic work of "Manuel darchéologie préhistorique, celtique et gallo-romaine", which was based in the years 1908 to 1914 (2. the posthumous edition of 1927). Its concept was for its time a unique job. Here to encompass all the then known knowledge of the prehistory of mankind from the paleolithic period laténskou, and this work has become a model of exemplary documentation of the material. Excavations of the celtic settlement Bibracte took over after his uncle J. G. Bulliotovi. Because of discoveries from the central celtic settlement Stradonice even learned English and translated into French the work of the Czech archeologist J. L. Pussy. He died 1914 in Nouvron-Vingré.
