LOS-M

The LOS-M reconnaissance set is a part of the artillery fire control system and is designed to conduct artillery reconnaissance of the battlefield and to obtain input for firing when performing fire support tasks. It is an artillery observer station with a reconnaissance group. It is intended to be deployed primarily in exposed areas of the battlefield, where it provides protection for personnel and equipment from grenade fragments, small arms fire and weapons of mass destruction. It can also be used in forward positions which must be quickly taken or which would otherwise be very difficult for an artillery observer to access. The asset can also be used, if necessary, to guard important areas and objects of both civilian and military character.

LOS-M performs the following main functions:
- searching for targets and determining their coordinates day and night and transmitting them to the superior element
- planning and requesting artillery and mortar fire
- correction of firing on firing and effective firing
- coordinating the execution of firing tasks by artillery and mortar units in coordination with the combat activity of the supported mechanised unit
- ensuring communication with the superior fire support coordinator and with squad and battery fire control stations
- monitoring the tactical situation of own and enemy units on a digitised map, displaying security zones and areas of interest
- liaison with the commander of the supported mechanised unit

The LOS-M reconnaissance suite was developed by upgrading the original LOS to increase the utility primarily in the areas of source system, sensors, communications and software to the level of contemporary reconnaissance systems. During the upgrade of the existing LOS set, some identical components (position manipulator, direction manipulator, day cameras, laser rangefinder and ID camera) as in the KBV-PZ Pandur II CZ reconnaissance vehicle were used to a large extent.

As part of the upgrade, the computer support for the operator's activities has been extensively increased, thus increasing the efficiency of conducting reconnaissance activity. Newly integrated communication means ensured better communication between mechanised units and artillery. The communications subsystem provides data input to the Combat Vehicle Information System and the squad's automated fire control system, ASPRO, and voice communications.

The crew consists of 3 to 4 persons. The driver's seat has been retained from the original LOS vehicle. The seat behind the driver is reserved for an alternate or forward airman. The commander's station is located to the left of the tower, and the integrated operator's station is to the right of the tower.

The software provides 2 basic modes of reconnaissance:
- Observation mode: used for terrain reconnaissance fully dependent on the operator's actions.
- Surveillance mode: automates the survey activity in the form of a programmed activity that will be performed autonomously without operator intervention. The operator defines the points of interest to be targeted by the sensor subsystem and, when the tracking mode is triggered, the image sensors scan the selected area. Furthermore, motion detection areas can be set in the surveillance area, and the system will automatically inform the operator if the surveillance area is disturbed.

The development of the LOS-M was carried out between 2011 and 2013 by the Military Technical Institute of Armament and Ammunition at a cost of CZK 22.343 million paid from the budget of the Ministry of Defence, resulting in the first prototype of the LOS-M vehicle. The other two LOS-M vehicles were upgraded under a contract dated 12 June 2015 for CZK 59,982,120 (including VAT) with a delivery date of 30 November 2015. The last three examples of LOS-M were built under a contract dated 15 December 2015 for CZK 91 438 354 (including VAT) with a delivery date of 15 December 2016. All LOS-M vehicles are operated in the 131st and 132nd Artillery Detachment of the 13th Artillery Regiment.
