The Panzerdraisine type Steyr K 2670 was the official name of an interesting vehicle built during WWII in 40 pieces. The crews, however, rather called them leichte Schienenpanzer or Panzersicherungswagen. It was designed at the Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG plant based on a requirement for an armoured train reconnaissance vehicle. Another task was to protect the tracks in places of partisan activity. Drezinas were in the line-up of some armoured trains of the "leichte Spähzug" type, consisting of ten drezinas each, used in the Balkans for anti-partisan service. Due to the low axle pressure, these machines could operate even on local bad tracks. Four of these light trains were formed in 1944 and given the designation le. Sp. 301 - 304.
Dates.
Weight - 7.5 t,
combat weight - 9.5 tons;
Crew : 5 - 8;
Length : 569 cm
Width : 252 cm
height without antenna : 227 cm
height with antenna : 253 cm
maximum speed - 70 km/h
Armour : 14.5 mm
The train had two axles, it was powered by an air-cooled Steyr engine (76 pcs) located in the centre of the vehicle.
The armoured hull had sloping sides, with doors on both sides and an air intake on the side. It also had two hatches in the roof of the vehicle. The vehicle did not have fixed guns but the hull had 6 machine gun ports, two at each end and one at the sides. These gun ports allowed the vehicle to be fired in a circular pattern. The original armament of the vehicle was 4 MG 34 machine guns and the crew's personal weapons. The vehicles were fitted with a radio station with a frame-type antenna on the roof of the vehicle as standard equipment. The driver's station was at either end of the vehicle, so it was possible to drive in either direction.
A peculiarity is the post-war service of machines of this type in Poland where at least one (but more likely 2-3) was assigned to the SOK (Służby Ochrony Kolei - railway protection) unit, how it got to Poland is unknown, their armament at the new owner was composed of DP machine guns.
