I Smoke – At st. George's

In the area of the site called "Smoke 2" was located in the so-called period mladohradištním (950 to 1200), or in the younger phase of the early middle ages, there were built, in the conquered and destroyed the Old Kouřimi, the přemyslid castle, the so-called hradské system whose purpose was in addition to the classic needs (military, trade, etc.) and consolidate the position of the přemyslovského of the genus in the Czech country.
The fortified settlement is situated on an elongated triangular ostrožně At st. George above the confluence of the Kouřimky and Ždánického creek, southeast of the city of Kouřim (Central bohemia region, district I Smoke).
Fortifications ostrožny took place throughout its circuit, however, today the stronghold is virtually negligible. During the development of the hillfort, which was probably at the end of the 10. century, was the area of the fortified settlement with an area of 6,2 ha divided by a transverse wall on the south, posed above the acropolis and to the north laid the forecastle. Archaeological researches it was found that the rampart was a wide 10 to 12 meters, while the consisted of the front stone wall with a width of about 2.5 meters, was further dostupňovaná fortification structure composed of two wings – the wooden chambers and grates. I managed to identify two opposite gates, which prostupovali a wall head-on. Probably from the 10. the century stood in the southern part of the hradiště, church of st. George (the first one-nave oblong building with a půlkruhovitou apse). Captured were also the remains of the areola of a fortified palisade.
11. century fitted hradiště function as the administrative centre for the surrounding region, was the seat of a princely administrator, there were courts and markets. Even here, then, during the reign of prince Jaromír shortly paved as well as coins.
Then at 12. century, it became the seat of the Děpolticů – one of the side branches of the dynasty. It was built already, the above-mentioned dividing wall, which defined the northern part, where it is then concentrated settlement and craft objects stood here already perhaps a church of saint Kliment. It is also further built fortifications and so is the youngest of the turn 12. and 13. century and a part of them and mainly the foundations of a stone tower-like structures at the tip of the ostrožny can be considered as an imitation of the beginning of the castle's architecture.
However, in 1223, during the conflict between the Děpoltem III. and Premysl Otakar I. it was the fort conquered and then actually disappeared. Not long on it then emerged on the opposite bank of the Ždánického stream the medieval town of Kouřim.
