Antonov An-714 - origin and development

The scheme of the chassis on the air cushion, in Russian called SEP - Shassi on Vozdušno Poduška ( Antonov An-14A. The aircraft was given the designation An-714, where the number 7 indicated the 7th General Directorate of the Ministry of Aviation, which belonged to the Kuibyshev design office of aircraft and helicopter landing gear ( Куйбышевское КБ шасси самолетов under the leadership of I. Berežnov she worked on this task. The machine carried a civil registration CCCP, but without any numbering. On the right front of the nose of the aircraft was the inscription An-714 in Cyrillic ( Ан-714).

The SEP used on the An-714 experimental aircraft consisted of three equally sized air cushions weighing 28 kg, placed in place of the original landing gear legs. The air under the lower surface of the circular base of each of the cushions was blown by hydraulic centrifugal blowers, which were rotated by hydraulic pumps of the GM-36 type. Their propulsion was provided by aircraft engines Ivchenko AI-14 RF.

The first takeoff of the experimental aircraft took place on October 20, 1970. During the tests, it was found that while the aircraft was able to take off at a speed of 90 km/h after as little as 117 meters during take-off from the concrete surface, distance 130 meters. Although the machine was able to take off and land even in crosswinds of up to 15 m/s and the surface of the runway SEP applied a pressure of only 0.07 atmospheres (a hundred times less than the classic three-point wheeled landing gear) test results were evaluated as unsatisfactory. The reason was that the relatively high operating pressure of 850 kg/m2 acting on a relatively small area caused the tearing of pieces of soil and dirt from the VPD, which were ejected directly against the blowers and power units. Therefore, the tests were completed in 1971. However, research experience was used in the research and development of another machine at SEP - An-14Š.
