The unit was founded on April 1, 1960 and its full name is "World Famous and Internationally Traveled Screwbirds".
From its foundation in 1960 to 1975, they used S-2E Tracker. After that, they were rearmed to the new S-3A Viking. In 1991, they received modernized S-3B Viking, which are equipped with newer avionics and sensors, which allows for a wider and more universal combat use .

In November 1993, the unit's function was changed from "Air Anti-Submarine Squadron" to "Sea Control Squadron".
Since its inception, the VS-33 gradually flew from aircraft carriers USS HORNET, USS BENNINGTON, USS RANGER, USS KITTY HAWK, USS CONSTELLATION, USS AMERICA, USS NIMITZ, USS JOHN C. STENNISa USS CARL VINSTON, from where it still operates today.

VS-33 gradually participated in combat operations in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, then Southern Watch and, most recently, Operation Enduring Freedom.
