The design of a new medium tank by Krupp resulted in a pair of designs Begleitwagen I Kp. (design ordered in 7/1935) and Begleitwagen II Kp. (design ordered in 10/1935).
The Begleitwagen II Kp. used the same tub as the Begleitwagen I Kp, the same drive and tension wheels, but the running wheels were changed. On the Begleitwagen I Kp. it was eight smaller wheels suspended by leaf springs, on the Begleitwagen II Kp. it was six larger travel wheels suspended by torsion bars. The Begleitwagen II Kp. had a similar but not identical body (ordered in 7/1936). A turret was not ordered for this design. The machine was constructed of unpanned steel.


The Begleitwagen I Kp. design was more successful and formed the basis of the type series Pz.Kpfw. IV. A comparison of the drawings shows that the serial Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. A used a superstructure, or rather a part of it (the front part of the sloping ceiling over the driver's and radio operator's compartment), which was taken from the Begleitwagen II Kp. project (the Begleitwagen I Kp. had this part straight).
The Begleitwagen II Kp. platform was used experimentally in the conversion to a bridge tank prototype.
