Shortly after take-off from Malta-Luqa airport, a Swearingen SA227-AT Expediter reg. N577MX, reg. no. AT-577, operated by CAE Aviation, the aircraft was used by the French Ministry of Defence in the search for ships and other vessels carrying refugees from Libya. All 5 crew members were killed, 3 of whom were believed to be members of the French secret service (this is claimed by unconfirmed sources). The crash of the plane was caught on at least one camera from a passing car, when the plane is in an unnatural position after take-off, crashes into the ground and then immediately a large fiery explosion occurs.
