Already in the early days of production Sd.Kfz.251, a programme to develop a successor to this armoured vehicle was launched under the designation HK 6.03. Apart from the new engine and transmission, the main change from the Sd.Kfz.251 (H Kl 6 p) was the new platform design. On the Sd.Kfz.251, the chassis was a frame on which the superstructure was mounted, whereas on the HKp 6.03, a hull was created into which the torsion suspension of the travelling wheels was incorporated. Three prototypes were ordered, and presumably produced. The 2nd prototype is documented photographically. However, this project was not taken into series production and the replacement program Sd.Kfz.251 continued with other projects. The final form of the replacement was the HKp 6.07, which was intended to replace both the Sd.Kfz.251 and the smaller Sd.Kfz.250. However, the development of the HK 6 series was cancelled in late 1942 and none of the developed types were mass produced.
