The Russian news agency TASS, referring to the official newspaper of the Pacific Fleet, Bojevaja vachta (Боевая вахта), announced that the Bal and Bastion missile complexes had been located in the Kuril Islands. The Bal complex, equipped with subsonic anti-ship missiles Ch-35, is located on the island of Kunashir ( 44 ° 07'00.00 "N 145 ° 50'00.00" E) and Bastion with supersonic missiles P-800 Onix on the island of Iturup ( 45 ° 02'00.00 "N 147 ° 37'00.00" E). These complexes belong to the composition of the 72nd Coastal Missile Brigade, formed in 2014. It is assumed that the units will carry out the first training fire by the end of 2016.
This is a further strengthening of the Russian Federation 's military presence in the Kuril Islands, leading to the creation of a coastal defense division in 2018.
