Miles M.14 Magister

In 1936, the ministry of aviation on the basis of good experience with aircraft Miles Hawk Trainer, which the air force used for training reserve pilots, decided to order their variant intended specifically for military pilot training. Their demands sum up to specification T. 40/36P. The desired type was for the first time in the history of the RAF jednoplošníkem, and also violated the early thirties established the rule that a new trainer aircraft to be of metal construction. The result of adjustments to the Miles Hawk Trainer was the type of Miles M.14, which differed mainly redesigned cabin, seats allow the use of parachutes and a complete set of equipment in both areas, allowing training flight blind. Instead of a fairing of the undercarriage wide "pants" was used kapotování much tighter, in addition, often the bottom part was fitted. The structure was wooden, covered with plywood.

The first take-off of the prototype M.14 carried out in April 1937. At the first flight of the military tests of a new type, named the Magister, but the machine got into an uncontrolled tailspin and the pilot had to leave the plane on a parachute. The investigation showed that the blame was extended cabin, which changed the wrapping of the tail. Therefore, they were subsequently redesigned tail surfaces, modified in their shape and height. This variant was given the designation M.14A. Both versions used čtrnáctiválcový inline engine de Havilland Gipsy Major on the performance of 97 kW. Arose, however, and variant, powered by a Blackburn Cirrus Major, M.14B Magister Mk.II, built but was only 10 of the machines - five for the RAF and five civilian.

The first of many serial Magisterů arrived at the flight schools in may 1937, the first series still in the form of M.14, all of the following as M.14A. In addition to aviation training units Magistry received also some was decisive for us and were also exported, e.g. to Ireland. In June 1940 it was on 15 machines tentatively placed a hanging device that allowed under the centroplánem carry eight desetikilových pum. It was an emergency rebuilding in case of a German landing. Other Magistery serve continue as a practice, the fasteners, and for training in flight by reference to instruments.

Between the years 1937 to 1941 when production was stopped, there arose the 1.293 machines, of which 1229 delivered to the RAF, where they served throughout the war. Approximately one hundred machines were built under license in Turkey. The largest foreign user of the Magisterů was Egypt with 42 machines, 15, Ireland should have, and two New Zealand, the other thirty of the machines were in 1943 to Turkey handed over to the RAF. After the war, were Magistery quickly discarded, many of them got into civilian hands. Business Miles portion of these machines rebuilt and alone on, offered under the designation of Miles Hawk Trainer Mk.III, these machines were often covered cabin. Under the same name were Magistery M.14 and M.14A sold on the civilian market even before the war. Two machines (Estonian Hawk Trainer III and one Magister) with different routes should get into the Soviet union. Despite the large amount Magisterů survived only a few, the big problem represent the quality of the production, especially war, because the glued joints of the structure is relatively quickly used up.

At the beginning of the war, the British Air Force wanted to allow for the possibility of using a separate wing, fastening it. behind a bomber on two beams that would allow another load of bombs to be carried, possibly fuel. The Master was chosen to verify this concept.
