Adna Romanza Chaffee younger was born on 23. September 1884 in kansas Junction City. His father Adna Romanza Chaffee elderly was a lieutenant general and second chief of the army general staff. In 1906 he graduated from the Military academy at West Point. Thereafter, he joined as a lieutenant in the 15. cavalry regiment, with which he took part in the occupation of Cuba. In the following years he was assigned to Fort Riley, where was located the School of equestrian services. Chaffee here he commanded the cavalry section. As an excellent horseman he was also a member of the u.s. equestrian team. Before the outbreak of the first world war he attended the French cavalry school in Saumuru. He then returned to teach at Fort Riley.

In 1914 he was 7. cavalry regiment was reassigned to the Philippines. In 1916-1917, he worked as a senior riding instructor at the Military academy. Then in the rank of captain, he held the position of the hand 81. the division, which is preparing to go to France. Here, then, served as deputy operations officer on the staff of IV. ward, and subsequently as the operations officer on the staff of 81. division. In this capacity through the battle of St. Mihiel and the battle of the Argon forest. the end of The war and after the period of occupation he was, now no longer in the temporary rank of colonel, as the operations officer on the staff of III. corps.

In 1919 he returned to the states he worked as an instructor at the School for commanders and general staff officers at Fort Leavenworth. After the war he returned to the rank of captain, but already in 1920 he was promoted to the rank of major and served in various capacities at the 3. cavalry regiment and IV. corps. In 1921, he became operations officer on the staff 1. the equestrian division. In 1924 he joined to study at the military university of the ground forces. Then, in the years 1925-1927, he commanded one eskadroně 3. equestrian regiment. From march to June then commanded a whole regiment. In 1927 he was in the rank of lieutenant colonel was transferred to the General staff, where he was in charge of the conceptual and doctrinal work on the mechanization of armies and the emergence of armored forces. In the years 1931 to 1934 he served as the executive officer at 1. the equestrian division. In 1934 he came back to Washington, in the context of the war Department, he served as head of the section of the budget and legislative planning.

In 1938 he was appointed the first commander of the 1. cavalry regiment (mechanized), and then the commander of the 64. equestrian division, taking out the title of this feature was at the same time the commander of the 7. cavalry brigade (mechanized), which was the germ of american armored forces. In the same year he was also promoted to the rank of brigadier general. In June 1940 he was appointed commander of the armored forces. In this capacity he had to coordinate the transition of all parts of the ground forces on the mechanized way of waging war. In October 1940 he was promoted to major general and appointed to command the Even. armored corps. However, the 22. August 1941 died in Boston of cancer. Buried at Arlington national cemetery. The spiritual father of u.s. armored forces, which on their emergence and development, he worked in the theoretical and practical level so he died before these forces engage in battles in the second world war.
