This topic describes a problem and call, relating to the registration of the title units of the US NAVY (not the USMC, there is it again otherwise!!!) VF before 1948.
Situation: mr. Grossnick in his book Dictionary of American Naval Aviation Squadrons Volume I - The History of VA, WEIGHTS, BAG, VAL, VAP and VFA Squadrons, the first episode, it is reported that in 1946 there were names of species of squadrons following, and I quote (pg. 13)
therefore, for the VF uses a variant of the fightING. Further, in 1948, there has been a change and all the squadrons have been renamed to fightER, and I quote str. 14:
in another book the same author states, and I quote:
everything would seem clear if the author of the piece on the first cited book cheerfully did not use the name of the Fighter Squadron for the squadron existing before 1948, quote, e.g., str. 418
The conflicting condition, and after a thorough study of available documents, I'm inclined to think that despite the conflict in the book containing the history of the units we will use for the unit VF before 1948 name FIGHTING. This decision is binding and will not appear if the primary sources (archival materials), which would show the name of the unit in the FIGHTER, so it is NOT indicate otherwise..
