Bedřich Geminder

-Communist functionary
He came from a German-Jewish merchant family. He soon broke up with his family and joined the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia after high school, working as an editor and regional party official. Because he did not have Czechoslovak citizenship (he was a Polish citizen on his father's side), he lived in the Czechoslovakia illegally and used the name Fritz Kremer. He was twice expelled from the Czechoslovakia for political activities (1930 and 1931), but continued to live there and worked in the editorial offices of the magazines Arbeiter Zeitung, Welt am Heute and Rote Fahne. He then went to the USSR, where from 1935 he worked in the apparatus of the Communist International as head of the press department. After its abolition, he was (until his return to the Czechoslovakia in 1946) director of the press and intelligence department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (b) in Moscow. For his services in these positions during the war, he was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Victory Medal. In 1946 he was granted Czechoslovak citizenship and became head of the International Department of the Secretariat of the Communist Party of the Czechoslovak Communist Party. In September 1951 he was dismissed from this post and worked in the foreign broadcasting department of Czechoslovak Radio until his arrest in November of that year. He was accused of treason and espionage and in November 1952 was sentenced to death in the trial of Rudolf Slánský and Co. and executed the following day.
