Syn Alfréda Velikého a Ealhswith se stal králem po smrti svého otce v roce 899. Edvard dokázal navázat na vojenské úspěchy svého otce a posléze je i překonat tím, že připojil Danelaw (Dánské území na britských ostrovech) a vládou na území Mercie, po smrti jeho sestry Ethelfledy, která tam do té doby vládla, od smrti svého manžela Aethelreda. Své první roky vlády ztrávil boji se svým bratrancem Aethelwaldem, synem Ethelreda I. Měl okolo osmnácti dětí ze svých třech manželství s Egwinou, Elfledou a Edgivou. Pravděpodobně měl i nějaké levobočky. Zemřel roku 924 a byl pohřben ve Winchesteru.
