Production of the M1296 Dragoon in the version with the Kongsberg MCT-30 weapon station was terminated in 2019 with the rearmament of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment. In 2018, the US Army launched a new project called MCWS (Medium Caliber Weapon System), which again addressed the integration of the XM813 30mm cannon on the Stryker armored personnel carrier. The project involved 5 (after 6 were recalled in May 2019) companies, and in August 2020 the Army took delivery of 3 finished prototypes for testing (Oshkosh Defence/Rafael, General Dynamics Land Systems/Kongsberg Defense, and Leonardo DRS/Moog). After the tests were carried out, Oshkosh Defence / Rafael's design, based on the Samson unmanned turret, was selected as the winner of the project. On 03.06.2021, the US Army awarded a $130 million contract for the delivery of the first 91 Stryker vehicles (DVH A1 version) with MCWS turret to the Stryker 1-2 Brigade Combat Team stationed at Lewis McChord Joint Base, to be executed by December 2023. The total contract could reach up to $942 million by 2027 if all 6 Brigade Combat Teams are armed with this asset, although it is tentatively stated that rearmament will only occur for three of them.
