In 1927, the tractor of engineer Otto Merker caught the eye at the DGL (Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft) exhibition in Dortmund. As a result, Lieutenant General Ludwig Ritter von Radlmaier (Reichswehr Ministry) ordered the development of a heavy wheeled and tracked vehicle for the army.
The development of combat vehicles in Germany was curtailed by the Treaty of Versailles, and therefore German authorities and companies sought various ways to camouflage the development of this military technology with other activities and in other countries. The Swedish firm Landsverk, which was almost bankrupt at the end of 1920, was a good fit for this purpose and was saved by German investment Gutehoffnungshütte Aktienverein für Bergbau und Hüttenbereich Oberhausen (GHH). Since German activities could not be after the lost World War I, the investment was covered by a Dutch company. They thus acquired 50% of the shares and gained considerable influence over the running of the factory. The company became a white horse in the development of German armoured technology. In the development of this wheeled tracked tank, the expertise of Otto Merkel was applied, who became chief engineer at Maschinnenfabrik Esslingen in 1927. The company was known for its support of the Nazi movement from its beginnings. Not much information is available on the design of this wheeled and tracked tank. A prototype was to be built at Maschinnenfabrik Esslingen, but a total of up to six vehicles are reported to have been built. Whether they were produced on German territory or in Sweden is questionable. My guess is that all were not even full battle tanks, but just chassis, and more likely that they were built in Sweden. The vehicles produced went through testing at Kama in the Soviet Union in the 1930s. After the trials they were probably returned to Sweden. As it was a matter of gaining experience this type was only an experimental project and did not gain favour with the German authorities. The very concept of a combined wheel and track chassis, although interesting, was a dead end in tank development. The Swedes used their experience with this type and applied the lessons learned to the development of Swedish armoured vehicles (Landsverk L-30, or Landsverk L-80).
