Wiesel 2
The development of the Wiesel 2 light armoured tracked vehicle was a response to the practical experience of combat deployments (Somalia, Balkans, Afghanistan) of airborne troops, where there was a need for a vehicle that was larger and more versatile. The design of the vehicle was addressed by a method of inheriting as much as possible from the previous type Wiesel 1. The manufacturer introduced a prototype in 1994, which the Bundeswehr ordered in 1995, based on a basic platform with no specific specification yet. The design of the vehicle was primarily influenced by the desire to significantly increase the internal usable space of the hull to twice the size. In practice, this meant lengthening the hull by 0.9 m and raising it by 0.165 m while leaving the hull shapes unchanged. The hull is welded with armour plates that can withstand projectiles up to 7.62mm calibre and shell splinters. The tracked chassis is composed of a drive wheel which is at the front, followed by four running wheels above which are two reciprocating pulleys. The Wiesel 2 has newly developed Diehl 622B tracks. Power is provided by a 1.9 TDI turbodiesel with direct injection of diesel into the cylinders and a power output of 81 kW (110 hp), which is capable of giving the vehicle a top speed of 70 km/h (70 mph).
The front of the vehicle contains a ZF HP 240 automatic transmission followed by the engine compartment on the right side of the vehicle and the driver's compartment next to it. The remaining part of the hull is reserved for the fighting compartment.
The basic version of the vehicle is a transporter for transporting the driver, commander and 5 soldiers, designated Wiesel 2
